Business Rates Officer

Are you an experienced Business Rates Officer looking a fresh new role?

We are recruiting an experienced Business Rates Officer to join our committed and friendly Revenues team on a permanent basis. You will deal with all aspects of the billing and collection and recovery of business rates, including maintaining computer records, dealing with routine correspondence, chasing unpaid debt and providing advice and explanations to customers at reception, in correspondence or on the telephone. You will provide an efficient and effective customer-orientated service to the public and administer the collection of non-domestic rates in accordance with Legislation and Council Policies. This role is remote; however, we would require you to be a commutable distance from Welwyn Hatfield District Council. You would also have the office to work on-site, if preferred. **What you'll be doing**:

- Liaise with Valuation Office Agency, submitting reports as required updating property information on the Valuation List
- End-to-end case management
- Process schedules from the Valuation Office and balancing of banding totals
- Determine eligibility for discounts and exemptions and annually review relief granted
- Processes amendments to Non-Domestic Rate accounts
- Processes changes to instalment payments, including method and frequency
- Issues bills and reminders to Business Ratepayers
- Allocate payments received to the correct financial year
- Deals with administration of the direct debit scheme and liaise with banks and building societies as necessary
Provide advice and assistance to the public either in writing, by telephone or in person
- Assist in the recovery of outstanding debts and attend court hearings for all aspects of recovery where required
**What you will bring**:

- Recent experience of working in Business Rates with knowledge of non-domestic software systems and regulation or experience working in Council Tax
- Effective communication skills both orally and written
- Knowledge of local taxation legislation, data protection, non-domestic Rates procedures
- Good team play
- Ability to manage your own workload
- Excellent attention to detail and computer literate
Flexible approach to work to accommodate changing demands and priorities
**It would be great if you had**:

- IRRV qualified to Technician Level 3
- Experience using Academy
