Consultancy Lead: Automation

**About the role**
We have an exciting opportunity to shape and grow TRL’s automation consultancy team to design and deliver solutions that identify and consider the impact of connected and autonomous vehicles on transport now and in the future. The automation team currently lead and support the safe and secure testing, trialling and deployment of automated technologies; the development of Regulation, Standards and guidance for automated technology testing and deployment; and undertake safety assurance for automated technologies. We are looking for an accomplished and enthusiastic manager with the ability to innovate and inspire. You will:
- Be **accountable for growing** TRL’s automation consultancy. This will be measured in the work that is delivered by the team and the revenue it generates for the business
- Redefine and grow understanding of automation **capability and competence** to better reflect the current and future need of our customers in the UK and Internationally
- Both personally and as a leader; **create solutions** to customer problems, through innovative research methodologies, technology and partnerships
Ideally, you will have a consultancy background and an evidenced understanding of impact of automation on transport. Your role is to ensure that the consultancy automation team is business focused; both delivering their current consultancy workload and ensuring that there is a growing pipeline of work for the future. You will work closely with other consultancy teams and our London test bed, the Smart Mobility Living Lab, to develop and deliver broad, multi-discipline research and consultancy programmes, driving social and economic benefit.
A key element of this role is the ability to build and manage teams. With hybrid and remote working being part of TRL’s operational strategy, you will need to be innovative as a manager as well individually; finding new and better ways to get motivate and manage a growing team.
**Key duties / Responsibilities**
- Manage your team to deliver their work to budget and plan, broadening team competence through delivery of multi-disciplinary projects and services.
- Using customer information and through liaison with Sales and Academy teams develop and maintain a capability roadmap for the automation team that incorporates the needs of transport in the future.
- Create solutions for tenders and customer proposals. Ensure your team deliver high quality content that meets customer needs.
- Manage staff performance and talent in your team against consultancy business objectives.
- Effectively communicate to your team and to senior management
- Ensure technical delivery is on time, within budget and of high technical quality.
**About you**
Essential
- Demonstrable experience of creatively solving customer problems in a business context.
- Proven capability of improving the competence and capacity of highly productive professional teams through your management
- Experience of working in a customer-centric business, working collaboratively with other functions to enable business success
- Ability to communicate complexity clearly and simply both to internal and external audiences, face to face, through media and in written form.
- Experience of the sales process including competitive tendering with the public sector clients would be an advantage
**Qualifications**:
- Educated to degree level or hold an equivalent level of experience
- Previous formal management training or significant experience in a similar role
