**Trainee Chief Operator**

**BACKGROUND INFORMATION**:
Sperry Rail Service is the world’s leading supplier of mobile ultrasonic rail inspection, and provides this safety critical service to global railway clients. This service is provided utilising an expanding fleet of more than 150 mobile rail inspection vehicles operating at speeds of up to 100 km/hr. equipped with sophisticated state of the art ultrasonic inspection technology focused on the company’s mission to **“Find All Defects”**. An Operations group of more than 200 highly skilled / qualified operators and a world leading engineering group (Sperry Global Engineering) support this technology.

The Core business of the Operations group is to frequently and reliably collect information about the customer’s railway, analyse the information and deliver a report of the findings back to the customer. The ultimate goal and strategy of the group and company is to provide a complete railway management service to customers around the world.

To collect the information a team of Vehicle Operators (headed by the Vehicle Operations Manager) frequently and regularly travel on vehicles (owned by Sperry or the customer), on agreed routes, to agreed times running the test equipment and recording its output. The Vehicle Operators routinely calibrate the equipment and monitor that its performance is within a specification tolerance agreed with the customer. Equipment is monitored for errors and failures to ensure it is kept in optimal condition, maximising its efficiency.

**ROLE PURPOSE**:
To prepare, maintain, calibrate and operate ultrasonic and Eddy Current test equipment for the Company and ensure that all testing is carried out in accordance with relevant Line Standards and specifications, providing a specialist service in rail flaw detection.

**KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES**:

- Operate the test equipment to the Sperry schedule / roster plan.
- Carry out repairs in accordance with assessed individual competency level.
- Maintain equipment (and vehicle where necessary) to the agreed standards.
- Maintain the quality and standard of ultrasonic and Eddy Current testing at all times.
- Demonstrate effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Provide timely and accurate returns of all associated administrative documentation.
- Abide by and promote safe working practices at all times.
- Adhere to company policies and practices at all times.
**SAFETY RESONSIBILITIES**:

- Comply with all Health & Safety Policies, procedures and statutory requirements.
- Notify line manager of any health & safety issues.
- Recommend safety related improvements for all areas of contact.
- Notify Line Manager and HSE Manager of impending health and safety issues.
- Ensure correct usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Report any unsafe incidents to Line Manager and HSE Manager.
