Job Role:

- Asa Junior Manager you will be expected to manage and be accountable for the dayto day running of the childcare provision, with the intense support of a SeniorNursery Manager.
- Toensure that the setting provides a safe, caring and stimulating environment forall registered children aged 6 weeks to 5 years.
- Toensure that implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) frameworkis achieved and implemented within the setting.
- Tolead and nurture staff in achieving excellence.
- Tomaximise occupancy levels and manage income and expenditure within agreedbudgets.

Main Duties:
Operations

1. Toensure all children and their parents/carers that attend the Nursery areenthusiastically greeted/welcomed by name on their arrival, and are activelyvalued and included for the full duration of each session. To both role modeland communicate it is a vocation to provide child care.

2. Tobe a key holder for the Building, ensuring that alarms are deactivated andpremises are safe and health and safety checks completed.

3. Toensure that the Nursery is adequately staffed at all times, ensuring statutorychild/worker ratios are consistently adhered to and that staff are effectivelydeployed. This will include the production of staff rotas and room plans.

4. Toestablish and implement procedures to ensure that the childcare building issafe at all times, ensuring that all activities are timetabled, that access isproperly controlled and that all necessary risk assessments are completed.

5. Toensure all trips are operated safely and securely at all times, with due regardfor example to registration of children, child/staff ratios, and health and safety.

6. Ensurethat all food and drink given to the children meets their individualdietary/faith requirements and comes only from the childcare kitchen or anotherapproved source. Ensure that highstandards of food hygiene and safety are maintained at all times by all staffwhen serving food to children.

7. Toensure basic Paediatric First Aid is available at all times by appropriatelytrained and qualified staff and, if used, incidents are appropriately recordedin the Accidents Book, parent/carers(s) are informed, and monitoringinformation submitted for the Associations Health & Safety Committee.

8. Toensure the Nursery operates at all times within and follows the Associations Safeguarding Children and Young Peoplepolicy. Ensure that all staff and othersworking in the nursery have the minimum necessary safeguarding training.

9. Withsupport from the Environment, Health & Safety Manager, to ensure theNursery operates at all times within and follows agreed Health and Safetyprocedures, including effective risk assessment, in accordance with theAssociations Health & Safety Policy, and to act as the settingsResponsible Person.

10. Toensure the nursery and all play areas, equipment and resources are safe to use,cleaned and prepared daily before the children arrive, and maintained inaccordance with manufacturers guidelines.

Quality, performance and education

11. Toensure that the Nursery provides a balanced range of age-appropriate curriculumand activities that, in as far as possible, meets the needs of each individualchild as outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

12. Toensure that each child in the nursery is provided with a Key Worker withparticular responsibility for their care, assessment/observation,information-gathering, and pastoral support, and to ensure such Key Workers aresufficiently directed, trained, and resourced to effective carry out suchduties.

13. Toensure the Nursery is fully compliant with Ofsted requirements, ensuring thatthat the Self Evaluation Framework is regularly updated and that reportsresulting from inspection visits are acted upon.

14. Toestablish and maintain strong working relationships with the parents/carers ofservice users, ensuring effective two-way communication through the use ofsocial media, newsletters, open events, parents evenings, etc.

15. Topromote positive attitudes and behaviours from all children, encouraging aculture that praises the positive and challenges the negative. Ensure all staff work within the guidelinesof the Behavioural Policy.

16. Toencourage respect for the religious and cultural beliefs of others with aspecific focus on Christian festivals, beliefs, values and practises,supporting the YMCA BC Chaplain to engage in the services delivered.

People management and development

17. Withthe support of the Associations HR Officer and Executive Head of EnterpriseServices, to recruit, induct, manage and develop staff as required.

18. Toline manage, observe, develop and, in their absence, operationally cover for,the Deputy Nursery Manager and other senior staff, enabling them to effectivelymanage the staff team.

19. Towork with the Head of Nurseries and Quality to ensure all staff are adequatelytrained and developed, co-ordinating a programme of regular team meetings andtraining sessions, as well as access to external training and professionaldevelopment opportunities.

20. Delivertraining where necessary, some of which will take place outside of normalworking hours.

Finance and administration

21. Toensure relevant and accurate information is obtained, regularly updated andsecurely stored, about each and every child/service user.

22. Youwill receive training and support to manage income and expenditure withinagreed budgets, and be responsible for nursery purchases within agreed budgets.

23. Withsupport from the Associations Head of Corporate Services, to ensure agreedsystems for the notification and collection of fees from individuals and thirdparties are maintained at all times, that agreed procedures for the handling ofcash are strictly adhered to, and that accurate and detailed records are kept,with monitoring information provided to the Finance Department on time asrequested. This will also involve the active chasing of anynon-payments/arrears.

24. Tomanage employment housekeeping, such as signing off time monthly time sheets,Annual Leave/ TOIL requests, and, with support from the HR Department, manageday to day employment issues.

Business development

25. Todevelop and deliver strategies that will achieve agreed occupancy rates.

26. Toprovide prospective customers with appropriate, prompt and compellinginformation that enables them to make informed decisions about their use of theNursery, and to enable them to conduct exploratory/initial visits.

Policy and procedure

27. Towork within the terms of YMCA BCG guidelines, policies and procedures at alltimes.

Junior Childcare Manager

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

Desirable

Experience of managing/deputy managing a Day Nursery that, at the time, was assessed by Ofsted as being good or excellent.

Previous experience of line managing/supervising staff in a Day Nursery setting.

Experience of working in day nursery settings, covering babies through to Pre-School children

Sound knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, with the ability to enable others to deliver them in a large Day Nursery setting.

Excellent knowledge of child development issues and the ability to devise activities suitable for the client age group

Experience in contributing to multi-agency safeguarding (child protection) case reviews/management.

Experienced in using day nursery software systems.

**Qualifications**:
Childcare & Education (Level 3) qualification

Maths and English to GCSE level or equivalent

**Skills**:
Possess strong inter-personal skills and the ability to engage/ build rapport with Early Years children and their parents/ carers

Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise and relevant reports.

Ability to line manage, supervise and develop staff, identifying strengths and areas for further development, and putting in place measures to improve performance and effectiveness

Ability to deliver significant performance improvements, possessing an eye for detail and the drive to bring about meaningful and lasting significant change.

Ability to manage accurate financial records, budgets, and cash-handling processes

Ability to deliver in-house training for staff

Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries

Possess good IT-user skills, including use of Word, Outlook, and Excel, social media and the ability to quickly and effectively master the use of nursery software systems.

General

Must dress in an appropriate manner for the role, wear the uniform provided and maintain a high standard of personal hygiene.
