- Job description- This is an opportunity to tackle a high-profile crime that is also a strategic priority for the Environment Agency: illegal exportation of waste. As a field-based Technical Officer, you will maintain oversight of a list of high-risk waste export load sites across a relatively large geographical area in the South East. We’ll look to you to plan interventions and make unannounced inspections to waste management facilities. You’ll also gather information and intelligence, implement intervention measures to prevent illegal waste export, and impose risk ratings.
Part of a dispersed team of office-based and field-based officers, you can expect to work with site operators, waste brokers and dealers, shipping agents and shipping lines. You will also provide technical help and training to different areas of the agency and external stakeholders involved in prevention and enforcement.
- The team- You will be working closely with a dispersed team comprising of both office and field based officers. You will input and assist your senior technical officers to drive the operational activity of the team and show the business where the current risk and opportunities lie. The Illegal Waste Exports Team is within Intelligence and Partnerships department (which includes Operational and Criminal Intelligence and Research).
- Experience/skills required- You will ideally have a background in waste or waste regulation, including a good knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation. However, if you have an investigatory or inspection background from a different area, specialised training can be provided.

- The flexibility to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.
You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
