Emergency Surgery Facilitator

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Emergency Surgical Facilitator (ESF) to join our team. The post holder will work autonomously to manage the trauma dashboard for Trauma and Surgical patients and ensure the smooth coordination of care for surgical emergency and trauma patients.
You will assess patients, support timely and effective management plans, and act as the key liaison between theatres, wards, the Emergency Department, and Critical Care. Working closely with Orthopaedic and Surgical Consultants, Service Managers, and Surgical Flow Leads, you will help optimise the emergency surgery/trauma pathway—minimising unnecessary admissions, reducing delays, and enhancing patient outcomes.
**In this pivotal role, you will**:
Coordinate emergency theatre bookings and trauma meetings.
Monitor, advise, and deliver care across the patient pathway.
Ensure efficient use of theatre capacity and high-quality, evidence-based care.
Support audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.

In hours is responsible for taking all emergency bookings, ensuring all relevant staff are informed of the booking. Acting as liaison for all departments promoting continuity and consistency of care.
In hours attend the trauma meeting to ensure co-ordination of the trauma dashboard and emergency theatre list is as smooth as possible and the theatre teams are aware of any specific requirements, e.g. loan kits, infection control precautions required.
Monitor, advise and deliver care to all emergency/trauma patients. Ensure appropriate treatment and care are provided from admission until surgery is complete and liaise with post-operative staff, handing over the care pathway.
Actively support Senior Theatre Practitioners, ward staff and members of the multidisciplinary teams to ensure that day to day clinical management and co-ordination issues in managing unplanned surgery patients are resolved efficiently and effectively.
Take the lead and work with the relevant clinical teams to ensure patients are pre assessed, relevant investigations and treatment undertaken to ensure the patient’s condition is fully optimised pre operatively.
Ensure theatre space is effectively used and prevent unnecessary pre-operative fasting of patients in liaison with clinical and ward teams.
Provide knowledge and expertise that will enhance the level of care required irrespective of the patient’s location on site.
Maintain channels of communication that facilitate MDT co-operation and co-ordination of care.
Ensure high quality delivery of care which meets the specialist and complex needs of emergency/trauma patients, whilst ensuring performance indicators and targets are met.
To provide specialist knowledge to support a quality service to patients and ensure all patients data are regularly audited in terms of length of stay, time to theatre and patient experience.
Ensure all patients and their relatives/carers are kept fully informed of progress and updated of any delays through the emergency surgery/trauma pathway.
Follow up relevant post-operative patients by telephone at home, as appropriate.
Ensure the development and maintenance of high standards of clinical care in accordance with professional nursing guidelines and Trust policies and procedures within available resources.
Play an active role in ensuring patient care is delivered in accordance with relevant quality guidelines and is evidence-based meeting best practice standards.
Contribute to the process for developing relevant clinical/quality guidelines and implementation of evidence based or best practice for emergency/trauma patient pathways and ensure that current theatre, ward and other team member’s practices are regularly benchmarked, audited and up to date.
Assist the Matron with the investigation of complaints and errors of clinical practice, advising on and participating in follow-up action where appropriate.
