**The organisation**
People Know How is a Scottish social innovation charity based in Edinburgh and East Lothian. We work with people and communities to develop innovative strategies and services to address social issues both locally and nationally.
Our aim is to support and empower both individuals and organisations to mobilise their assets and realise their true potential People often don’t realise that they know how, and that’s where we come in - unlocking ideas for a better future, today. We call this social innovation.
We do this locally by developing and delivering new and innovative projects in collaboration with people and partners. We do this nationally by initiating action-research projects in partnership with academia and stakeholders from all sectors including other charities, community groups, businesses and the public sector, derived from our local project work. From these activities, we run nationwide campaigns that influence government policy, enhancing community development and acting as a catalyst for systems change, policy development and improved practice across Scotland.
**Role purpose**
The Youth & Family Coordinator is responsible for working as part of a team, supporting children, young people and their families in the transition from primary to secondary school. The role supports our strategic aim of ensuring a positive transition for all children across Scotland.
**Key responsibilities**
- Undertaking referral assessments, including obtaining consents and liaising with referrers
- Coordinating appropriate support for children, young people and families (including designing, organising and facilitating one to one or group activities)
- Identifying, facilitating and supporting befriending matches between children and young people and an appropriate volunteer befriender;
- Carrying out risk assessments when appropriate
- Liaising with a range of multi agencies (including, school staff, social workers, other third sector workers, etc) to ensure smooth delivery of support
- Planning and developing work to support children, young people and families and participating in the planning and review of service development;

- Appropriately recording, monitoring and evaluating information gained through the journey of the children, young people and families
- Building and maintaining knowledge of related services for children and young people
- Support and supervise volunteers, interns and students on placement when required
- Working to legislative, ethical, policy and procedural requirements, including internal policies and procedures and other relevant policies and procedures to uphold best practice including safeguarding
- Supporting and offering relevant training as part of the induction of new team members joining People Know How (including volunteers, interns, placement students, staff, etc.),

**Person specification: Essential**
- Hold a relevant Youth Work Qualification or relevant experience
- Need to be/become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Group scheme
- Working with and supporting children & young people
- Working with parents, carers and families
- Basic knowledge of GIRFEC principles and values
- Basic knowledge of issues that are relevant to young people in their transition to high school
- Ability to share ideas and work collaboratively
- Able to work independently;
- Ability to use a variety of methods to engage young people and families
- Ability to support a small team of volunteers, interns and placement students
- Ability to communicate effectively with young people and team members
