The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides large-scale computing facilities, data storage and infrastructure at both Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire. Made up of numerical analysis, scientific computing and computation groups, the expertise and intelligence SCD provides UKRI, underpins almost every key calculation across the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and beyond.
**_About the role:_**
Due to the growth of SCD we have a vacancy for a highly motivated Database Administrator to join the group. In this role you will be responsible for developing and operating professional database services supporting the work of STFC alongside taking an active role in advising on the architecture and technology strategy for the database services going forward, with an end goal of meeting the science facilities ever increasing needs for storing, searching and analysing their data.
**_Work Programme:_**
Support the full database/system management lifecycle (requirements, design, specification, install, maintenance, security patching, RMAN backups etc.) for Oracle RAC, PostgreSQL, Galera Cluster, MySQL, MongoDB etc.
Database performance monitoring and tuning
Create and manage project plans for database implementation, migration and upgrade.
Develop standards and policies that the group can adopt to fulfil and comply with STFC standards.
**_About you:_**
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate good communication skills, good organisational skills, and an analytical approach to problem solving. You’ll need to provide a share of on call support (systems can be supported remotely) and undertake some travel in the UK and overseas, e.g. to CERN, conferences when travel for meetings/conferences resumes.
Additional training and certification opportunities are also offered.
**_Essential Skills:_**
Experience with Oracle 19c in a production service environment, including Oracle RAC, installation, backup/restore, monitoring, performance tuning etc.
Experience with another database technology, e.g. MongoDB, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL
Knowledge of Unix/Linux.
Good communication skills, good organisational skills and an analytical approach to problem solving
You must be able to take a reasonable share of the team’s on-call (24/7 support) responsibilities - services can be supported remotely.
