Senior Gardener

This is a new role for Beningbrough, the team is expanding so we can deliver on new garden plans to become one of the great gardens of the north of England. The eight acre garden surrounds a magnificent Baroque mansion and we have a long term vision to develop the hall, restaurant, shop, car park and garden. This is a rare opportunity to work in a historic setting and be part of an energetic and ambitious garden team introducing exciting contemporary designs by Andy Sturgeon. You will play a key part in managing the team, developing the new garden areas and ensuring exceptional standards of presentation. We need a strong leader who can inspire and engage, thrives on change and likes the outdoors.

What it's like to work here:Beningbrough Hall is an 18 th Century house north of York. It attracts over 136,000 visitors a year and is open year round. in the summer 7 days a week. We have big plans for Beningbrough. The gallery in the House has yearly exhibitions and we have a long term garden vision designed by one of the UK’s leading landscape and garden designers. Work is about to start on the fourth area of the vision, the wilderness garden. Alongside this work we have proposals to extend the restaurant and retail space, as well as the car park. This is an exciting time for Beningbrough and we are looking for an enthusiastic person who can play their part in maintaining and developing the garden into one of the great gardens in the north of England.

What you'll be doing:Reporting in to the Head Gardener and Parkland Manager, you will manage the team of staff and volunteers, creating their activity programme and working alongside them in all weathers. As well as ensuring exceptional standards of presentation and horticulture in the gardens as a whole, you will be looking after the newly built Mediterranean Garden designed by Andy Sturgeon and the gardens nursery. You will also be a Duty Manager for the property as part of a team who ensure the property runs smoothly for our visitors, and you will deputise for the Head Gardener.

Who we're looking forWe’d love to hear from you, if you’re:

- someone who combines practical experience in horticulture with appropriate qualifications
- used to supervising others in a similar role
- highly knowledgeable about plants
- confident in using and maintaining garden machinery, including chainsaws, tractors, hedge-trimmers and mowers (both walking and ride-on)
- aware of relevant health and safety legislation and practices
