We are currently recruiting for a Project Team Leader to work within the Biosafety Team based in the Diagnostics and Pathogen Characterisation division at Porton Down.

The post holder will have direct line management responsibilities and will supervise workstreams within the Biosafety Group.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and proactive research scientist to build on existing work and to develop new ideas to study and better understand the transmission of infectious agents in the indoor environment and the effectiveness of mitigations designed to prevent transmission. Results will be disseminated to internal and external stakeholders through reports and presentations, with the post holder expected to write scientific publications and reports and contribute to guidance documents.

The successful applicant will join a team committed to carrying out applied microbiology research to inform pathogen infection control and prevent waterborne and emerging healthcare-associated infections.

- The post holder will have direct line management responsibilities and will supervise workstreams within the Biosafety Group. The successful applicant will design and carry out projects investigating the dispersal, spread and control of microorganisms within the built environment. Projects will focus on the mechanisms of transmission (aerosol, surface, and water) and the efficacy of mitigations including ventilation, RPE and decontamination in healthcare and laboratory settings.
- Results from the projects will be disseminated to internal and external stakeholders through reports and presentations, with the post holder expected to write scientific publications and reports and contribute to guidance documents.
- A knowledge of aerosol science is desirable for this role.

**The successful applicant will also be expected to**:

- Contribute to developing project proposals for submission to external and internal funders and to supervise the academic and practical training of junior staff.
- Analyse data using software and databases as appropriate and disseminate research findings through completion of reports, presentations and publications.
- Identify, evaluate and report new procedures where appropriate and ensure the project operates to a high scientific standard.

**Key responsibilities of the role includes**:

- Lead and manage projects studying the dispersal and spread of microorganisms within the built environment.
- Develop, validate and utilise a range of aerosol science methods/assays/techniques in support of the research objectives and activities.
- Line management and supervision responsibilities including the training of junior staff allocated to the projects.
- Analyse data and disseminate findings through provision of reports, presentations and publications.
- Establish links with stakeholders and collaborations within and outside UKHSA as necessary to benefit the project and/or department.
- Ensure project deliverables are met on time and within budget.
- Undertake all assigned work in accordance with UKHSA's Risk Management Systems, policies and procedures.
- Ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with UKHSA’s Code of Safety Practice and to work within any Quality Systems that are applicable to the site.
- Act in accordance with the UKHSA values and behaviours.
- Perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.
