**Research Fellow in Microfluidics and Nanomaterials**:
Working closely with a multidisciplinary team based in the Schools of Physics & Astronomy and Medicine (Prof Steve Evans, Dr Sally Peyman and Prof David Jayne), you will work on a project to develop an in vitro colon mucosal biofilm model. The model will be used to i) aid our understanding of how the microbes within the mucosal biofilm interact with the intestinal tissue to modulate human health and ii) use these model platforms to test novel therapies using combinations of bubbles and ultrasound.
Microfluidic approaches will be used to develop a novel organoid/mucosal biofilm model replicating critical aspects of the mucosal biofilm /intestine interface. This simplified model will contain the key microbes known to modulate gut health. The platforms will be grown on-chip, allowing the biofilm's evolution to be followed and its dependence on physical parameters such as shear flow, chemical and gas gradients, etc.
This project also seeks to investigate the use of microbubbles (MB) and nanobubbles (NB) targeted against key pathogens to i) identify pathogenic regions associated with biofilm infection and ii) use therapeutic MNB to provide the localised delivery of antimicrobial agents into biofilms.
This post is funded by, and forms part of, our new National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Leeds Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). This exciting investment in translational medicine provides a unique opportunity to drive research which makes a difference to the health and wealth of the United Kingdom, but also to our local community.
Our new NIHR Leeds BRC builds on our strengths in musculoskeletal disease and engagement with patients and the public and now brings in research in surgical technologies, haematology (with the University of York), cardiometabolic disease, pathology, and antimicrobial resistance. With a vison to improve health and wellbeing by accelerating diagnosis, enabling early treatment that is personalised for each patient and, where possible, prevent disease and infection. It is driven by the need to address the grand challenges of an ageing, multi-morbid population.
