The post-holder will be expected to undertake continuing professional development, building on their skills in assessing, examining, arranging and interpreting investigation and communicating with patients. Physician associates work with senior medical practitioners, under supervision. This supervision may be direct, indirect or remote depending on the experience of the post-holder and the role undertaken. The post holder will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialties as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients. Under current legislation the post-holder will be required to seek assistance in prescribing and in ordering radiological investigations.

It is expected that the Physician Associates will become involved in the activities of the Department, including coordinating patients on ambulatory pathways related to their specialty, reviewing patients admitted to their ward/s and providing subsequent management of cases in conjunction with the medical team. It would be envisaged that the role would be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee’s clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service. The post-holder will be expected to participate in quality improvement work, clinical governance activity and patient experience projects.

To assess and examine patients, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigation findings, form a list of differential diagnoses and recommend management/treatment accordingly. To assess, review daily and discharge patients.in line with the MDT management plans. Instruct and counsel patients and their relatives with regard to mental and physical health issues. Have, develop and maintain specialist medical knowledge related to stroke. Keep up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice. Contribute to achieving and maintaining performance within the hospital and department. To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
