**Who we are**:
The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people.
We transform lives by providing support, information and practical advice for the 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK, as well as their three million family members and carers. Since 1962, autistic people have turned to us at key moments or challenging times in their lives, be it getting a diagnosis, going to school or finding work.
We change attitudes by improving public understanding of autism and the difficulties many autistic people face. We also work closely with businesses, local authorities and government to help them provide more autism-friendly spaces, deliver better services and improve laws.
**Why we need you**
The charity has over 100 branches and groups, all run by volunteers, who provide local support to people affected by autism. Every branch is different and so are the activities they provide - they may run parent support groups, adult social groups, children’s activities, or focus on providing information or campaigning. However, no matter how big or small, all branches are hugely valued by the people in their local area.
Social groups are a great way to give people on the autism spectrum an opportunity to improve their confidence, self-esteem and reduce isolation through spending time with others in a walking group setting.
Volunteers are invited to support the Walking Group leader with this very valuable activity.
**What you will be doing**
- Building up positive relationships with people on the autism spectrum and other volunteers in a walking group setting.
- Sending a report to the branch to outline how the sessions are going etc.
- Attending the walking group sessions
- Welcoming new individuals to the group
- Liaising with other volunteers to ensure there is a volunteer present for the duration of the walking group
**Skills experience and qualities useful for the role (but not essential)**
- Confident communicating with walking Group Members and listening to their thoughts and ideas.
- Enthusiasm for walking
- Confident in taking the lead at introducing themselves and speaking to new people attending the walking group.
- An ability to make new people feel welcome
- Understanding of autism
- Empathy and understanding
- Good communication and interpersonal skill
**When and where**
The walking groups will meet monthly at Bothwell Road, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire
Ideally you will live in the South Lanarkshire area.
**Support**
- Designated Branch Engagement Officer to answer any queries and support you.
- Various training available
- Insurance cover for all walking group activities
**What you could get out of it?**
- Improve support to autistic adults and families of people on the autism spectrum in your local area
- Access free training and learn new skills
- Meet new people
Whilst we are able to make reasonable adjustments for volunteers you will need to be able to volunteer independently as we are not able to offer one to one support.
**_ It is a requirement that you live locally to undertake this role._
