£11.00 per hour - Permanent

A vacancy has arisen for a Countryside Ranger for two green space sites in the St Albans district - Bricket Wood Common and Nomansland Common.

Bricket Wood Common is a SSSI site which features rare Heathland and Ancient Woodland habitat and hosts protected species such as the Great Created Newt.

Nomansland Common is located between Wheathampstead and Sandridge and features a variety of habitats including Heathland.

The grounds maintenance of both sites are delivered by John O’Conner [GM] Ltd on behalf of St Albans City & District Council.

Requirements of the role include:

- Undertaking duties supporting the day to day operation and management of the site.
- Involvement in habitat management, path maintenance, access improvements, organising events and co-ordination and engagement with stakeholders and the local community
- Ideally a background in countryside management and/or an Environmental related qualification or work experience.
- You will have excellent communication skills, be well organized an able to work on your own initiative.
- A full driving licence and use of a car is essential.

Duties include:

- Regular patrols of the Commons.
- Carrying out routine checks including monitoring the health and well being of Cattle on Bricket Wood common and liaising with the volunteer cattle checkers and conservation grazier.
- Health and Safety - Checking fencing and equipment on site.
- Attend Events and Commons Management Committee Meetings.
- To promote and raise awareness of wildlife in the Commons by a combination of led guided walks, community events and presentations
- Keeping notice boards up to date.
- Keep footpaths and desire line clear of obstructions by regular litter picking and scrub clearance.
- Uphold the byelaws.
- Engage with and assist volunteer groups with any wildlife recording and conservation on site.
- Be able to work a total of 18 hours a week, splitting their time equally between Bricket Wood and Nomansland Commons which will include some weekend and evening working.
