**Job Purpose**
The appointee will play a significant role in delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry. The post-holder will be expected to participate fully in the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry, including involvement in agenda setting and the development of strategy at a high level within the Dental School. The focus of the post is Learning & Teaching. In addition, applicants will be expected to perform the duties of an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. This full-time post consists of 10 programmed activities (PAs) with a 50:50 split between University and NHS duties, and an academic extra programmed activity (EPA).

**Main Academic Duties and Responsibilities**
1. To lead the design and delivery of a range of teaching, assessment and feedback activities in Restorative Dentistry, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School.
2. To be responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities available to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students is continually enhanced.
3. To participate in the ongoing development and review of both undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.
4. To supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate student elective and research projects.
5. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
6. To provide mentorship as part of the undergraduate mentor programme.
7. To undertake research and other scholarly activities relevant to delivery of dental education, and to publish the outcomes in peer-reviewed journals.
8. To contribute, at a high level, to the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry.
9. To undertake senior administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching and the academic management of the Dental School and wider School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing, as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Dental School.
10. To undertake undergraduate teaching activity at Outreach Centres located outwith the Dental School & Hospital if required.

**Main NHS Duties and responsibilities**
1. To undertake the clinical and non-clinical duties as an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, as agreed at annual joint University / NHS job planning. This will include
a) Undertaking new patient referral clinics, providing specialist level advice and treatment, and providing Consultant cover.
b) Contributing to appropriate multi-disciplinary teams for high priority groups as required (Head and Neck Cancer, Hypodontia, Cleft, and Dental Trauma).
c) Complying with all policies relating to administration and patient care e.g. vetting of referrals and completion of all paperwork necessary to support the management of patients within agreed timescales.
d) Working with service managers and clinical colleagues to manage caseload in a flexible way, to ensure that national and local clinical priorities are achieved.
e) Developing training opportunities for junior dental staff and those on Higher Specialist Training. This may include being an educational supervisor.
f) Taking a full role in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
g) Participation in joint University/NHS job planning and appraisal.
h) Ensuring appropriate clinical/supervisory cover is provided for periods of leave.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**
A1 Full registration with the UK General Dental Council.
A2 On the UK GDC Specialist List in Restorative Dentistry or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion.
A3 Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry, or equivalent.
A4 Successful completion of an SAC approved minimum 5 years training programme in Restorative Dentistry or within 6 months of completion, or equivalent.
A5 Master’s degree or Higher Research Degree.
A6 Possession of a CCST in Restorative Dentistry, or equivalent, or within 6 months of eligibility to receive this.

**Desirable**
B1 Fellowship in Dental Surgery; or MFDS from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges; or equivalent.
B2 Hold, be working towards or willing to complete within two years, a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.
