**About Downing College and the Wellbeing Service**
Founded in 1800, Downing College in the University of Cambridge has a unique and magnificent setting among twenty acres of lawns and trees, yet is located close to the centre of Cambridge.
Currently, Downing has an annual intake of around 140 undergraduates and has just under 1000 undergraduate and graduate students on its roll. The College is home to over 50 Fellows and 160 non-academic staff, and prides itself on being a friendly and informal community for all.
Downing’s Wellbeing Service provides mental and physical wellbeing support for Downing students and is housed in its own Student Wellbeing Centre. The service is delivered by a full-time Head of Student Wellbeing, a full-time Student Health Practitioner (Registered Mental Health Nurse) and a term-time Student Wellbeing Advisor. It works closely and collaboratively with Downing’s Tutorial and Admissions Office, which has oversight of College admissions and tutorial matters and provides essential administrative support to students, supervisors, Tutors and Directors of Studies. The Senior Tutor, Prof Guy Williams, is responsible to the Governing Body for all aspects of the educational and welfare provision of the College and the administrative team is led by Sarah Pickard, Academic Registrar. Dr Kate Daniels is Head of Student Wellbeing.
**Details of the post**
For the post of Student Health Practitioner (part-time), we are seeking a Registered General Nurse (RGN) to deliver outstanding health and wellbeing support to all Downing students. The post-holder will work up to 2.5 days a week (7.25 hours per day) during term, for a total of 30 weeks a year (3 x 10-week blocks, in line with the University’s core operational periods).
The Student Health Practitioner (part-time) will work closely with all members of the Wellbeing Service to provide timely, responsive and sensitive support to students experiencing physical ill-health or psychological or emotional difficulties. Guided by the principles of health promotion, early intervention and prevention, they will assess, triage, advise, refer and provide follow-up care to students as required. They will maintain up-to-date knowledge of support services across the College, University, NHS and third sector, and will provide clear guidance and signposting to students and student-facing staff, including the Academic Registrar, the Tutorial and Admissions Team, College Porters, Tutors, Directors of Studies and others.
The post-holder will be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and will have a sound understanding of safeguarding principles, duty of care and data protection. They will have previous experience of working with young adults, ideally in a higher education setting, and of dealing with confidential and sensitive information. They will have excellent interpersonal skills, will be highly organised, and will be able to balance and prioritise multiple commitments. Given the pressures that arise at certain times in the academic year, we seek an adaptable and enthusiastic team player who is committed to helping our students thrive at a world-class University and beyond.
