We are looking for a **Lock Controller** within our South Wales Marine Services team, based in Newport.

**About the Role**

This is a key operational role responsible for the safe and efficient coordination of vessel movements through the Newport dock lock system. You’ll be working as part of a dedicated team to manage water levels, operate lock gates and sluices, and maintain clear communication with marine traffic and stakeholders.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Operate lock gates, sluices, and control systems
- Monitor and regulate water levels for safe vessel transit
- Communicate with vessel masters, pilots, and harbour staff via VHF radio
- Maintain accurate records of vessel movements and lock operations
- Conduct inspections and report faults or operational issues
- Respond to emergencies and support marine operations as required
- Monitor CCTV and ensure security of the lock area
- Assist with training and mentoring of new staff
- Contribute to continuous improvement and operational efficiency

**What We’re Looking For**

**Essential**:

- Confidence working in a dynamic marine environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to provide responsible advice
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Competency in VHF radio operation
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Willingness to undergo and pass ABP medical assessment

**Desirable**:

- Experience in port or harbour operations
- VHF Radio Operator Certificate
- Familiarity with Marine Safety Management systems
