Senior Nuclear Regulator
At the Environment Agency, we are responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste across the nuclear industry in England. Whether it be an operational power station, or a new build project, our regulators work with nuclear operators to ensure the highest levels of environmental protection are achieved. As a Senior Nuclear Regulator, you’ll be at the forefront of this work. The role’s not just about waste. As a regulator, you’ll be expected to understand the businesses and technology you regulate, how they operate and the impact they could have on people and the environment.
We are looking for someone with experience of the nuclear industry and the determination and enthusiasm to drive environmental improvements. Site operators aren’t the only people you’ll deal with. At the Environment Agency, we are committed to the people and places we serve. Interaction with members of the public is an essential part of the role. You’ll also need to be willing to play your part in responding to incidents both within the nuclear field and across other functions of our organisation.
You’ll need a sound understanding of relevant legislation that you’ll regulate against and an appreciation of the challenges the industry faces.
The team
Our nuclear regulation groups are based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire (South) and Penrith, Cumbria (North). Within our groups, we have teams focused on a number of programmes. These include operational reactor sites, decommissioning, fuel re-processing, assessing new reactor designs and radiation incident management. The Senior Nuclear Regulator role can include working across a number of these programmes. This role demands a flexible approach.
Experience/skills required
We are looking for someone with experience of working in the nuclear industry or regulating it. We expect you to have a good understanding of Government nuclear related policies and priorities and a wide national perspective on the regulation of the nuclear industry by the Environment Agency.
You should be able to demonstrate a well-organised approach, with excellent communication, technical leadership, team-working and IT skills. Technical skills in radioactive waste management, radiological assessment or nuclear engineering would be an advantage.
You’ll need a sound understanding of relevant legislation that you’ll regulate against and an appreciation of the challenges the industry faces. You’ll understand modern environmental challenges and issues. You should be a great communicator and have experience of:
- managing a programme of work to achieve results
- influencing and persuading others
- working with industry to influence its plans and performance communicating effectively
- working with members of the public.
Contact and additional information
Interviews are expected to take place on 04 or 05 May 22 and may be carried out face to face in Birmingham, depending on circumstances.
