Phlebotomist

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels. Experience off adults and children is essential
a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
c. Maintaining accurate patient records on EMIS Web
d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
g. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters
**Secondary responsibilities**
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist assistant may be requested to:
a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
**Qualifications**
Relevant qualification in venepuncture
Good standard of general education
**Experience**
Experience of working with the general public
Experience of working in a healthcare setting
Experience of working in a primary care environment is ideal but not essential
**Clinical knowledge and skills**
Venepuncture
Ability to record accurate clinical notes
**Skills**
Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
Clear, polite telephone manner
Effective time management (planning and organising)
Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
Good interpersonal skills
Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure
Competent in the use of Office and Outlook
EMIS web skills

**Other requirements**
Flexibility to work outside of core office hours (if required)
Ability to travel around practice area to support potential home visits.
**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 12 per week
**Salary**: £9.81 per hour
