**Background**
PKAVS is a leading charity in Perth & Kinross, enhancing lives and connecting communities through diverse services in the areas of Carers, Mental Wellbeing, Third Sector support and Volunteering. Every year PKAVS enhances the lives of over 5,000 local people, helping them to overcome barriers and achieve their goals. PKAVS is also the Third Sector Interface for Perth & Kinross, supporting and developing the Third Sector and enhancing the Sector’s role in Community Planning.
PKAVS Carers Hub supports unpaid carers of all ages who are living in Perth & Kinross and caring for family, partners, friends or neighbours. Our trained support workers and volunteers help over 2500 adult carers retain a life outside of caring and develop skills or interests to enhance their own lives. PKAVS Carers Service uses a holistic approach in working with people who have caring responsibilities and their families to assess and plan support. Support can include access to training, respite services, information & advice, and support groups.
The service is available virtually through a multi-agency website and locally, through carers support staff working in localities in Perth & Kinross. PKAVS carers support staff will work as part of a health & social care partnership approach with health and social care colleagues who support complex care in a community setting.
**Role**
PKAVS has an exciting opportunity to work as part of the team responsible for continuing development and delivery our telephone befriending and helpline service in Perth & Kinross.
The telephone service is targeted at unpaid carers living in Perth & Kinross, as part of a network of support, the aim of this telephone helpline will be to have regular contact with unpaid carers to ensure that targeted support can be put in place as and when required, so significantly reducing the possibility of carer breakdown due to stress and exhaustion.
The team continue to be proactive by using referrals received from partners/frontline staff to contact carers and then maintain regular contact to offer support. Part of the role will include signposting to other support services.
To be successful in this role you will have an active interest in people and over time you should become a ‘good friend on the phone’, someone the carer can share a laugh with but most importantly be there to listen and give emotional and practical support during difficult times.
**Key Tasks and Responsibilities**
1.Receive and act upon incoming telephone calls from unpaid carers.
2.Use referrals received to make initial contact and then further regular telephone contact with carers to offer emotional and practical support.
3.Pass information received through these regular telephone contacts to the team coordinator for signposting onto other appropriate support services if deemed necessary.
4.Be aware of, and promote local services for carers including available technology, aids and adaptations.
5.Participate in training and awareness raising activity relevant to support for carers.
6.Comply with PKAVS record keeping requirements.
7.Make the carers you work with feel better connected, supported and valued.
Over time, trust and meaningful relationships will be built and you will become a listening ear to give emotional support in difficult times. Therefore, attributes you will need are patience and a warm and caring personality that will shine through in every telephone call you are involved in.
