Postdoctoral Research Assistant. Grade 7, 0.5 FTE. 6 months duration.
We are recruiting an exceptional individual to join us as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant within our clinical and preclinical pain research team. This is part of a wider initiative to join us in the multi-disciplinary Consortium Against Pain Inequalities (CAPE) or the Partnership for Assessment and Investigation of Neuropathic Pain (PAINSTORM) funded by the by UKRI, Versus Arthritis and Eli Lily Advanced Pain Discovery Platform (APDP).
Working in Ninewells Hospital with co-supervision by Prof Lesley Colvin and Dr Line Caes (University of Stirling), you will support delivery of work packages 1 and 2 in CAPE to understand the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on chronic pain and responses to treatment. Work package 1 will include developing a comprehensive theory-driven tool for assessing the impact of ACEs on chronic pain and its treatment (the CAPE ACEQ).
Work package 2 includes developing/ enriching relevant large population cohort data (eg UK Biobank, ALSPAC) with CAPE ACEQ, and examining associations between ACE exposure, adverse events in adulthood, chronic pain and opioid analgesic treatment.
The post is within the Chronic Pain Research Group in the Division of Population Health and Genomics, and will work closely with the Tayside Clinical Trials Unit (TCTU), the Health Informatics Centre (HIC), and Alleviate -the Advanced Pain Discovery Platform (APDP) Hub.
Your priorities will include:
- Work with Dr Line Caes and others (other Dundee based PDRA (Dr Rebecca Skinner), research team, Patient Advisory Group, key clinical professionals, third sector), to progress the patient informed systematic review of existing instruments assessing adverse childhood experiences.
- Combine learning from the outcomes of the systematic review to produce the CAPE-ACEQ, assessing its acceptability, reliability and content validity by comparing it in a cohort with existing ACE data.
- Collaborating with members of the research team, to enrich existing cohort data with phenotyping on ACEs, chronic pain and medication use (e.g. STRADL/ Generation Scotland, UKBiobank, ALSPAC, Lothian Birth Cohort).
- Work with large datasets to analyse associations between ACEs and chronic pain, and analgesic response.
Who we’re looking for:
- PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in relevant related field (e.g. epidemiology).
- Knowledge of the above fields of study and good working knowledge of statistics and statistical software packages.
- Evidence of knowledge through previous publications, presentations, and other outputs.
- Good interpersonal skills, demonstrating ability to interact constructively in a diverse team including physicians, data scientists and preclinical scientists.
