Job Description - Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator
Grade: 5 (SCP 11-17)
Responsible to: AHT Curriculum Enrichment
1. JOB PURPOSE
The post is for an individual to take overall responsibility for the Duke of Edinburgh programme across Hayesfield Girls’ School. The role will also involve some support for wider outdoor enrichment in the two sites.
2. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award Co-ordinator is responsible for the coordination, smooth running, safety, enthusiasm and success of the Award. What follows is not necessarily a comprehensive definition, but an overview of the areas of responsibility. This role will work closely with Mendip Outdoor, our external expeditions provider (known as the Approved Activity Provider - AAP). Main expeditions are planned for Enrichment and Intervention Week wherever possible.
2.1 Leadership
- To lead and coordinate delivery of the Bronze, Silver and Gold and ASL Awards, including recruitment, retention and training of students and volunteers/staff, ensuring high completion rates
- To form good relationships with students that promote enjoyment of the D of E programme and are in line with the aims, policies and development plans of the school
- To inspire those working within the D of E programme by personal example
- To keep up-to-date with D of E developments and regulations and implement changes as appropriate
- To manage the recruitment, training, communication, and operational organisation of, the many volunteers and other staff involved
- To plan and organise the expeditions alongside Mendip Outdoor, ensuring that procedures are implemented, including letters and consent forms for parents, briefing notes for supervisors, risk assessments, training for participants, information booklets, equipment, etc.
2.2 Management
- To keep the Line Managers at Hayesfield Girls’ school (HGS) informed about issues and progress, including any concerns, developments, annual requirements, and so on
- To plan, staff and organise the annual calendar of events, liaising with relevant staff at both schools to ensure as few clashes as possible with other activities, events, etc.
- To liaise, communicate and work with the national and local D of E authorities as required
- To ensure that material/displays are in place for School Bulletins, Open Days and other events
- To manage an up-to-date database of volunteers, including ensuring completion of necessary forms, DBS, other required checks, minibus licences, and necessary training, including Child Protection
- To manage the substantial budget and equipment store
- To manage a database of students participating in the Awards
- To meet regularly with the students undertaking DofE in order to encourage the completion of the Award requirements.
- To ensure that Duke of Edinburgh’s Award records, including eDofE, are kept up-to-date and to take whatever action is necessary to sustain and improve performance by students.
- To run sessions, as required, to enable students to complete all sections of their Award.
- To liaise with outside organisations to find and promote opportunities for students to complete the sections of their Award.
2.3 Other
- To be familiar and work in line with the ethos of the School, the School Development Plans, Staff Handbook and School Policies
- To attend training sessions, expeditions, Award Ceremonies, and other events, as necessary
- To strive for personal and professional development through active involvement in the School’s appraisal system and performance management procedures
- To be committed to the safeguarding of children and young people
- To ensure that effective policies are in place so that the needs of all pupils including those with particular difficulties, disabilities or other needs are met as appropriate and ensure that these relevant policies and procedures are implemented and updated annually
- To ensure the school’s Health and Safety Policy is implemented within D of E, and attend School Health and Safety meetings.
3. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
DofE Leaders must undertake the e-induction and Introduction to the DofE courses.
Further training may be undertaken by completing the DofE Leadership Programme
Essential:
- Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Assessor qualification
- BELA (Basic Expedition Leader Award ) qualification or equivalent
- ML (Mountain Leader) qualification
- Recent and relevant experience of delivering expedition training to young people
- Experience of working with young people in either an 11-16 or post 16 environment
- An ability to organise and plan effectively
- IT literate
- Able to provide inspirational leadership and motivate young people
- Experience of working with young people
- Build, maintain and facilitate effective working relationships with a wide range of people
- Plan, manage and monitor own tasks and time.
Desirable:
- Evidence of a flexible approach to irregular hour
