JOB TITLE Cook
REPORTING TO Management Team
JOB PURPOSE To carry out the preparation, cooking, presentation and service of all meals, using a variety of cooking equipment and methods.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Should hold City & Guilds of London Certificate 706/2 or equivalent and have at least one year’s experience in a kitchen or kitchen department.
- Genuine interest in, and experience of working with, the relevant group
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Team player
- Willingness to participate in Vocational Training Programmes
**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:
1. Duties include supervision and control of staff engaged in catering duties, receiving orders, stock control, placing orders.
2. Carry out the preparation, cooking, presentation and service of all meals using a variety of cooking equipment and methods.
3. Developing menus and reviewing these on a regular basis.
4. Have a good basic practical and theoretical knowledge of the preparation of food and the production methods used in the kitchen.
5. Cook should be able to carry out a full range of duties to a high standard with limited supervision.
6. Maintain high standards of cleanliness in the kitchen in line with the company policies and statutory requirements.
7. Operate and use most types of kitchen and industrial catering equipment and carry out the daily maintenance of the equipment.
8. Knowledge of safety precautions and firefighting procedures.
9. Supervise other members of staff in the catering section.
Communication:
1. Participate in Staff and Resident meetings as and when required. If improvements can be made by a change in procedure or materials used, it is expected that the Cook will contribute to the meetings to the benefit of other staff and residents.
Training and Development:
1. Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
2. Attend mandatory training days/courses, on or off site, as and when required.
3. Participate in relevant NVQ training to achieve required qualifications.
Health and Safety:
1. Quality control, safe custody and correct storage of all food supplies.
2. Adhere to the Company’s rules and guidelines of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
3. Follow all the Company’s rules and guidelines regarding maintaining good standards of food safety.
4. Report immediately to the Home Manager, or Nurse in charge, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a Resident, colleague, self or another.
5. Understand, and ensure the implementation of, the Home’s Health and Safety policy, and Emergency and Fire procedures.
6. Responsible for; understand and comply with statutory and legal requirements that are relevant, including COSHH, to ensure a safe environment throughout the Home
7. Report to the Home Manager or the Maintenance Person, any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.
8. Promote safe working practice within the Home.
General:
1. Promote and ensure the good reputation of the Home.
2. Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
3. Notify the Home Manager, as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty, and also on your return to work from all periods of absence.
4. Ensure the security of the Home is maintained at all times.
5. Adhere to all Company policies and Procedures within the defined timescales.
6. Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained
7. Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.
