Biomedical Support Worker

An opportunity has arisen for Full-Time Biomedical Support Worker to provide assistance with administrative tasks in the Pathology Support Unit.

The post holder will be a part of a team of Biomedical Support Workers delivering support services to departments within Pathology.

The post holder will work under supervision while processing blood, urine, human tissue and other materials.

To perform laboratory duties as directed by a supervisor.

The post holder will undertake some technical and administrative tasks to ensure reliable service delivery.

This post involves good attention to detail; the post holder will be expected to follow Standard Operating Procedures and have good IT skills.

The successful applicants will be required to join the shift roster as soon as appropriate and when deemed competent to cover early, late and night shifts on a rota basis.

Depending upon the location of work, some or all of these duties will apply:
Safely handle potentially infectious blood, urine, human tissue samples, and hazardous chemicals on a daily basis.

Prepare samples for analysis by sorting, labelling them with Laboratory number barcode and entering patient demographics and technical laboratory data onto the Laboratory Information System.

Assist with the training of trainee staff and perform competency assessment documentation

Attend all mandatory and statutory training.

Ensure that the workplace and workbenches are kept clean and tidy.

Maintain a flexible approach to the post in order to rapidly assimilate changes in workload, patterns and requirements.

Ensure that reagents are stored and used according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures.

Carry out appropriate daily maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations.

Perform manual and automated laboratory investigations to Standard Operating Procedures.

Support the biomedical scientist staff in the processing of samples.

Subject to competence assessment the post holder may discharge technical duties as part of a small team outside core hours to support the laboratory service.

Participate in effective stock control of reagents and consumables.

Use the Pathology inventory management system.

Carry out postal duties including Incoming mail, outgoing mail and referred samples

Print Pathology report from Neopost and prepare them for collection.

Participate in the shift system as required.

Work on the Send Away bench to ensure specimen are appropriately packaged to reach the referral laboratories.

Can label and request all samples from diverse screening programs

Answer phone calls on the diverse Pathology Lines (Pathology enquiries and BTU appointment lines) to respond to the needs of Pathology Users.
