Part Time Gardener

**Part Time Gardener (3 days per week) £15,000**

The 4 acre garden at Sulgrave Manor was designed in the 1920’s by famed architect and garden designer Sir Reginald Blomfield. The gardens surround the Tudor home of the Washington family, today an accredited museum. The garden has been undergoing renovation in recent years and new garden areas are planned to restore and enhance these original designs.

**PURPOSE OF JOB**

We are looking for an enthusiastic gardener to work with the Head Gardener and a small, dedicated team of volunteers to work on the routine maintenance of our gardens, including work on decorative and seasonal bedding and plant propagation. You will also work to help create new planting schemes and areas linked to the exhibitions inside the museum.

You will have experience of horticulture in a public park or gardens, and probably a horticultural qualification. You’ll have an excellent knowledge of plants and horticultural techniques and be able to present a warm and friendly welcome to the gardens.

**Garden**

Assist with garden maintenance in the herbaceous borders, herb borders, hedges, formal lawns and pot displays ensuring that these are presented at the highest standard at all times.

Assist in the maintenance and construction of hard landscape features including fences and paving.

Assist in the maintenance of the plant sales area.

Regular duties include mowing, strimming, weeding and planting.

**Maintenance**

Assist with general maintenance on site to include painting, carpentry and setting up furniture.

Undertake minor repairs as instructed.

Collection and removal of litter.

**Any other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post. These include**:
Assist with car parking on busy days and events.

Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

The postholder will sometimes be required to direct/support garden volunteers according to the agreed work schedule.

**LOCATION, HOURS, ETC**

This job will be based at Sulgrave Manor.

The post is available on a part time (22.5 hours per week).

**PERSON SPECIFICATION**

**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**

**ESSENTIAL**
Good horticultural knowledge required preferably with horticultural qualifications or equivalent experience. Knowledge of gardening/grounds maintenance terms.

Experience working in a publicly open space or private garden with public opening.

Experience of undertaking general maintenance/handyperson tasks

Awareness of the requirements associated with operating within publicly open spaces

Good knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation and experience of this within a garden setting.

Knowledge and experience of using a variety of horticultural machinery.

Full clean driving licence.

NPTC Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1 & PA6) or willingness to undertake appropriate qualification
