**Location: largely home based with occasional travel to MoD sites**
**Please note that this role is not full time, working pattern is to be determined by the requirements of investigations.**
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a central government department with a mission to protect our country and provide the ultimate guarantee of its security and independence, as well as helping to protect its values and interests abroad.

**As a Lead Investigator, your main responsibilities would be**:
- Lead independent investigations into criminal and misconduct allegations in accordance with the Service Police Complaints Commissioner’s (SPPC) guidelines.
- Conduct investigations within agreed timescales, resources, and quality standards.
- Draft and agree Terms of Reference for investigations.
- Undertake investigative actions, including interviewing, and taking statements, preparing case files, and making recommendations for criminal and/or disciplinary action.
- Take part in criminal, misconduct, and inquest proceedings where necessary.
- Report to the SPCC on investigation progress, areas of risk and resourcing requirements.
- Visit incident scenes and supervise scene management where required to ensure that all necessary action is taken to preserve and recover evidence.
- Attend post-mortems and brief pathologists as required.
- Write investigation reports upon completion of the investigation for submission to the SPCC.
- Prepare disclosure schedules for court martial and inquest proceedings.
- Review potentially unpleasant material, liaise with traumatically bereaved families and provide robust external scrutiny of actions and decisions.
- Identify potential learning for Service Police forces to consider improving the service they provide and prevent harm to the public (including members of the Armed Forces community.
**Essential**:
- PIP2 qualification (or to be qualified via Grandfather Rights)
- Experience of conducting investigative interviews, evidence gathering, analysis and presentation.
- Evidence of excellent analytical and report writing skills; ability to reach and document clear, rational, evidence-based, and independent decisions based on analysis of existing and emerging information.
- Experience of engaging effectively with a diverse range of people and stakeholders, and evidence of a commitment to equality and diversity within the workplace.
- Full driving licence valid for driving in the UK.
- Ability to communicate effectively with complainants, bereaved families and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritise and manage tasks effectively to deliver quality outcomes within demanding timescales.
- Ability to work effectively in a team with diverse ideas and people.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and adapt communication styles as appropriate.
