We are looking to recruit a Health and Safety Advisor to act a competent person for the Trust, on all Health and Safety matters in accordance with the management of Health and Safety at Work regulations.

You will work as a member of the Patient and Organisational Safety team and across all aspects of the Trust business, providing advise and support.

To act in an advisory and supportive capacity to managers and staff on Health and Safety legislation, identification of workplace hazards, appraisal of health and safety risks, advise on effective control measures

To review and revise Trust Health and Safety Policies to ensure they meet legislative requirements and that procedures/practices are updated to reflect relevant changes

Liaise with and assist the Trust Fire Safety Officer of fire related issues as required

To provide education and training in relation to Health and Safety

To act as the Trust Medical Devices Manager; in accordance with Trust Policy requirements in order to ensure that the purchasing and maintenance control of medical devices is regulated and that staff are competent in recognising and reporting when equipment is not fit for purpose

Act as the Trusts security expert, ensure that security issues relating to the LSMS are dealt with in a professional and timely manner, making appropriate advice, judgements and referrals inline with national and local legislation and policy. Making judgements involving complex facts or situations which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a complex range of options.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

To have the knowledge, understanding and autonomy to make decisions in relation to Health & Safety issues.

To make judgements involving complex facts or situations relating to health and safety, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.

To advised and support managers to ensure the Trust meets its statutory obligations in respect of health and safety at work matters and to advise and assist to ensure that risks and hazards are eliminated or reduced to a minimum

Liaison with the Health and Safety Executive to ensure that the Trust meets it reporting requirements including reporting of RIDDOR incidents

Attend all Trust meetings relevant to the post holder’s role, and to deputise at meetings on behalf of the Head of the Patient and Organisational Safety Team as required

To co-ordinate, extract and analyse health and safety incidents and present these in a meaningful report to relevant committees within the required timescales

To prepare an annual health and safety report for the Quality Committee

To work collaboratively with all departments, to ensure an integrated approach to providing a safe working environment throughout the Trust premises

To take a proactive approach in raising awareness of Health and Safety issues by:

- Providing support and information to the mandatory trainer ensuring their skills are updated to reflect changes in legislation and practice
- Delivering Health and Safety training as part of the statutory and mandatory training programme
- Provide additional support and bespoke training as requested by mangers across the Trust

Plan and lead an annual programme of health and safety audits, preparation of action plans arising from audits and ensuring actions completed

Provide specialist and expert advice and training on health and safety requirements across the Trust relating to estates management, environment, waste issues etc.

Provide advice on mandatory training related issues including object and person specialist knowledge

To provide manual handling training in the absence of the mandatory trainer

To co-ordinate and administer the CAS alert system ensuring timely response to alerts and provide assurance of actions completed in liaison with the Head of Patient and Organisational Safety/Patient Safety Manager

To act as a focal point for accidents and near misses for staff, patients and visitors ensuring that appropriate advice and support given
