The Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) is an Agency of the Scottish Government responsible for the assessment and payment of student entitlement for Scottish Students studying within the UK. The organisation has its own IT Department that develops and maintains a number of services from cradle to grave.
The IT Infrastructure & Cyber Security branch provide a critical role to ensure the organisation has digital capabilities, capacity and are cyber resilient.
The Senior Database Administrator is a diverse and interesting post and forms part of a small team who reports to the Head of IT Infrastructure and Cyber Security. A Senior Engineer (Database Administrator) defines the Database support strategy and the strategy for security administration.
They liaise with leads within IT operations and IT Development on how databases are performing and changes that need to be put in place. They may manage and maintain certain aspects of an database depending on the complexity, size of a project and the likely impact it will have on the business.
The Database Administrator will play a pivotal role in maintaining and implementing key databases in the organisation. The role will carry out database Management duties including performance monitoring, optimisation, security and reporting. The role will work closely with the development team to implement Changes to database design and participate in data integration activities.

**Job description**:
- Manages Oracle database configurations for Oracle versions 10g through to 19c including installing, upgrading, cloning, backup and patching of databases as required in our Production, Disaster Recovery and development environments including the creation of design documents by following standards for database administration, ensuring procedures exist and are followed for all routine administration activities.
- Maintains Database environments to agreed standards and operate with Technical Integrity of all Live databases within agreed performance criteria and ensuring backup and recovery plans are tested regularly.
- Maintain operational and technical documentation to an agreed standard and. Manages database resources, including allocation of system storage. Working with the capacity management function, plans for future storage requirements, and prepares cases for additional resources.
- Ensure high availability to our services unless otherwise agreed with the business. Good quality consistent data being available for the specialised area.
- Dealing with service desk calls and Incidents to be addressed within agreed SLA’s.
**Responsibilities**:
**Essential Criteria**
2. Managing and configuring databases including high availability using clustering technologies, RAC, Oracle Discoverer, Oracle Internet Application Servers, RMAN, OEM 12c/13c, bespoke scripts and Oracle Data Guard disaster recovery solutions. Experience of Design, Installation, Configuring, cloning, Tune, Support, Backup, SQL Hardening, Partitioning and Patching.
4. Monitors database activity and resource usage. Optimises database performance.
