Job description

The Cicely Saunders institute is looking to recruit a Research Project and Coordination Assistant to join the team and provide support across a range of projects currently being undertaken within the department in order to build a portfolio of research experience as a junior researcher.

The role holder will be responsible for coordination of projects, including meeting administration, processing of expenses and project related procurement, preparing, formatting and proofreading reports and peer-reviewed publications, and a range of other research and operational activities.

The role will primarily support:
1) A National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded Partnerships study taking place in the South West led by Professor Richard Harding

2) A Marie Curie funded project looking to influence policymakers to better end of life care; and

3) A Medical Research Foundation funded grant to create an educational video to show some key findings of a completed MRC funded project.

The post provides unique insight to the workings of diverse research studies and an exciting opportunity to develop a career in research and is based within the Cicely Saunders Institute, the worlds’ only purpose built Institute for Palliative Care and Rehabilitation.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities
- Monitoring of key project milestones
- Meeting coordination, administration and minuting
- Processing of expense claim forms for Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) members
- Project related procurement and travel booking
- Event coordination as required
- Proof and draft reports for the supervisory team, funders and other appropriate groups.
- Proof and draft conference papers and papers for publication.
- Provide cover for other members of the project or Professional services team as appropriate and required.
- The role holder will be part of the Institute professional services team and will be responsible for coordination of one or more operational aspects of the Institute as required by the Institute Business Manager.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. A degree in health or social sciences or similar awarded to a high level (e.g. first or 2.1)

2. Relevant research experience, demonstrated by participation in research projects, research management or support specifically in palliative care, health services research or a related field

3. Demonstration of a good understanding of research methods in health services research and/or palliative care

4. Accurate and fast-typing ability, Audio-typing/transcribing skills

5. Excellent computing skills - in Word Processing, reference management databases and packages to support data analysis (e.g. Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) with ability to be self-supporting

6. Able to prioritize competing workloads and to grasp new information and learn new skills quickly

7. Good time management skills with ability to multi task and prioritise, and complete tasks within set deadlines

8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

9. Strong organisational skills

10. Knowledge of academic reports, including referencing styles

Desirable criteria

11. Knowledge and skills on adherence to the data protection act and GCP guidelines
