- Job description- This is an exciting opportunity to help shape innovative water supply.
Across the country, water companies are developing innovative solutions for providing public water supply. In Devon, Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly, water has historically been sourced from rivers, lakes and groundwaters; however
- because of an increased risk to our water super supply related to climate change and rising customer demand - additional water sources are required. We are looking for a Water Quality Specialist to ensure that discharge from desalination plants and other novel approaches do not negatively impact our natural environment.
This will be an important piece of work, and a unique licensing and permitting determination process for the Environment Agency. It will involve cross discipline working, multiple regulatory bodies, and a challenging timeframe, and will lead to development of nationally relevant guidance for future desalination options for water supply.
The role will include the following: Reviewing discharge permits for existing desalinisation plans to identify best practice; technical input to determination of discharge permits; agreement of water quality monitoring plans; liaising with partners (e.g. Natural England) to ensure wider impacts are considered; working with teams virtually to find solutions consistently.
In addition, this is an opportunity to learn, share knowledge, and develop guidance ensuring we approach these novel abstraction schemes in a nationally consistent way now and in the future. There will also be opportunity to engage in other drought solutions, separate from desalination.
- The team- You be part of the Integrated Environment Planning (Water Quality) team which is a dynamic, supportive and fun team fully committed to improving the water environment. You will also be working closely with technical specialists in other teams who are responsible for water resources, groundwater, ecology and permitting through a ‘virtual team’ approach.

- Experience/skills required- You will need:

- A technical background in water quality and understanding of the current pressures facing the water environment and the solutions that can overcome these problems.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interpret complex water quality information to varying audiences
- The ability to work collaboratively with others and influence workstreams to ensure water quality outcomes are secured
- Experience of working with water companies will be advantageous but not essential
- Ability to work in dispersed teams as we are currently largely home based

Desirable criteria:

- Experience in water resources permitting / regulation.
