An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Division of Surgery and Cancer for a training Clinical Endoscopist post to join a well-established endoscopy team providing an excellent service.
Clinical/ Nurse Endoscopist play a vital role within the Endoscopy contributing to the strategic development of endoscopy to ensure excellent care for current and future patients whiles ensuring all national and local targets are achieved for waiting times and promote positive patient experience.
To address the increasing demand for endoscopy services the Trust is supporting a training post at Band 7 (Annex 21). The post holder will be entered onto the national training programme validated by Health Education England (HEE) with the expectation to complete within reasonable time frame. This post holder will be promoted to a band 8a upon competition of the HEE programme and non-medical prescribing course.
The post holder will be expected to perform up to a maximum five endoscopy lists per week with follow up clinics to inform patients of the results of the endoscopic test where appropriate.

Upon completion the post holder will work autonomously and exercise a high level of clinical expertise to ensure the maintenance of clinical excellence. He/she will independently undertake diagnostic and therapeutic upper and or lower gastrointestinal endoscopy on sedated and non-sedated patients.
The post holder will work in collaboration with the Clinical Directors, Lead Clinical Endoscopist, Service Manager and Matron to provide the best possible service for patients accessing the service, within agreed protocols, guidelines and pathways for patients undergoing GI investigations.
Please note that this job may require some evenings, weekends and cross site to ensure service needs are met.
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is an Acute Trust which also runs community services in Lewisham.
We have 8 endoscopy rooms cross sites and are both JAG accredited. At Lewisham site, we provides Bowel Cancer Screening as part of the NHS Cancer Screening Programmes to the 56 -74 year old populations of the boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich and Lewisham.
This post holder will be joining a well established team of 4 Clinical Endoscopists and well supported by skilled Gastroenterologists and Surgeons.
**Key Result Areas & Performance**:
Clinical
1. To manage responsibility for own clinical case load and to seek support from clinical colleagues in the management of complex cases and where necessary to transfer care to a Consultant colleagues.
1. Use highly developed communication and interpersonal skills required to disseminate sensitive and potentially complex information to various patient groups.
1. Refer patients whose fitness for a procedure may be in doubt to the referring Consultant or multi professional healthcare team for more appropriate support and achieve a coordinated specialist service.
1. Working within defined clinical protocols and be responsible and accountable for a prescribed protocol driven clinical caseload receiving referrals for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients who present with GI symptoms.
1. Deal with complex clinical situations - recognise and instigate treatment where appropriate in patients experiencing an adverse event or reaction and recognise limitations and seek advice when required.
1. To offer an individual service and psychological support to patients and carers adapting the service to incorporate their diverse cultures, ethnic backgrounds and any disabilities they may have
1. To use advanced interpersonal counselling skills to inform patients and their relatives of a diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer or other gastrointestinal disorder providing empathy and support and act as a resource for information and support to patients/relatives
1. Ensure details of procedure are accurately entered into computerised and paper records and results are communicated to the patients General Practitioner.
- To offer psychological support using level 2 counselling skills to patients with colorectal cancers and their families from diagnosis and in conjunction with other healthcare professionals, as appropriate.
- Where appropriate and in conjunction with other clinicians, to discuss with patients their treatment options for colorectal cancers - in appropriate depth - with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise.
- To be fully independent and accountable for clinical practice undertaking advanced highly technical, high risk invasive diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures to aid diagnosis and provide treatment.
- To participate within the straight to test service undertaking colonoscopy and if necessary undertaking telephone triage.
