About the Post This post combines the role of Sister/Charge Nurse in Endoscopy and the role of Nurse Endoscopist. The post holder will provide a nurse‑led endoscopy service for patients undergoing assessment and investigation for gastrointestinal disease, performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures following agreed protocols. Accountable for their practice and to sustain and improve their knowledge and professional competence. They will also act as a role model and provide senior support and training to Trainee Nurse Endoscopists. In cooperation with the multi‑disciplinary team, the post holder will provide clinically effective and efficient care and treatment, giving expert advice to nursing and medical colleagues at all levels regarding the management of lower GI/upper GI disease, and will be responsible for establishing the interpretation of policies relating to practice in Endoscopy and facilitating access for patients requiring endoscopic procedures. They will ensure that patients and their relatives are involved in decisions about treatment and care, that endoscopy‑specific guidelines and protocols are adhered to, and that JAG standards are maintained. Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites. Key Responsibilities Perform gastrointestinal procedures within agreed protocols and guidelines. Obtain informed consent from patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy. Identify clinical abnormalities and act upon them with agreed protocols. Lead on assessing, planning and implementing high‑quality care, and evaluating care options for patients in the clinical area, in line with the Trust values and objectives. Lead on complex clinical care for patients within their area. Assist the endoscopists in performing interventional procedures such as ERCP, EUS, stent insertions and dilations. Support Endoscopy in maintaining the Joint Advisory Group’s (JAG) KPIs, guidelines and accreditation. Ensure that standards and waiting times are met to provide a quality service to patients, relatives and carers, in accordance with Trust targets. Ensure that Endoscopy lists are fully utilised and patients are prioritised according to local and national guidelines. Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff, being aware of hazards and taking appropriate action as necessary. Clinical Responsibilities Ensure the safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication, in accordance with established Trust policy. Ensure the JAG standards are adhered to and implemented at all times. Promote and maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients, their families and staff, according to national and local Infection Control guidelines, Health & Safety legislation and Trust policies and objectives. Coordinate discharges and transfers, promoting timely and safe processes for them. Ensure that patient flow and the management of beds is effective and safe. Provide sound evidence‑based clinical advice as required to staff and patients. Maintain a good understanding and implementation of clinical escalation procedures as required. Understand the Trust clinical governance framework, and participate in the promotion and safeguarding of high standards of care, through effective risk management & governance, and adherence to the Trust values. Ensure that the team promotes, ensures and adheres to the Trust safeguarding policies. Undertake effective multi‑professional work with colleagues to deliver care. Coordinate and manage nurse‑led clinics where appropriate. Coordinate specialist functions, including making clinical decisions where appropriate. Monitor quality of standards of care, in line with CQC requirements and Trust and Divisional objectives. Deliver and supervise a high‑quality patient experience. Work with the manager to collect and disseminate data on quality indicators in line with national and Trust objectives. Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring equipment is safe and used in line with Trust policy and values. Promote and maintain patient safety at all times, including proactively implementing falls prevention. Lead role in the detection, management and prevention of safeguarding issues.
