Senior Technical Operator

Job Introduction
BBC Spotlight is the most watched program in the South West across the terrestrial channels. From our multimedia centre in Plymouth, we provide an unrivalled service of regional news and analysis of events and feature led pieces across our 13,000 square km patch.

Main Responsibilities
BBC South West is looking for a talented senior technical operator with experience of working across the full range of technical disciplines associated with live news. You’ll work on all our regional news and current affairs including Sunday Politics, bulletins and our brilliant 18.30 program ‘Spotlight’.

All of these high-quality HD productions require a STO bursting with ideas, creativity, inspiration, enthusiasm, experience and professionalism. You’ll edit using Quantel and Final Cut Pro X, and will be out shooting news (PSC) packages to a tight deadline. You will be expected to operate our fleet of live vehicles and WMT/LiveU.

You’ll also be working in our modern mosart controlled gallery, including lighting control, robotic cameras, live sound mixing and comms routing.

With further training we would also love you to become proficient in directing our full range of live output using our automated gallery system.

If you’ve got a passion for making fantastic television and great online content we want to hear from you. You should have the creativity, technical knowledge and resilience to work as part of a team and alone across all of our technical disciplines.

You should have demonstrable experience of editing on Quantel and FCPX, and a current showreel. You should have a knowledge and experience of the current systems used within English Regions, including Openmedia, Viz and Jupiter.

You should have experience of working in a live TV news multi-camera production gallery, with skills in sound mixing, lighting, vision control or directing.

The ability to shoot and edit news and features to a high standard out on the road using PSC equipment to tight deadlines is desirable. We love creativity and the ability to bring something a bit different to the table. You should be well across the use of Drones, Go Pro, OSMO, and mirrorless cameras.

You’ll need a great rapport with journalists, producers, presenters and other technical staff. We want your input at the planning phase, and we want your skills all the way through the shoot and your creative genius in the edit.

You’ll be prepared to embrace a learning environment and be an excellent communicator and team worker. You will love the idea of coaching a less experienced colleague, and you’ll be keen to share your experience with anyone at any time. You should be good at dealing with managing production and technical aspirations, and pragmatic about what to do if program demands change at the very last minute

You’ll be keen to muck in with all aspects of the job and get your hands dirty, and you should be able to review a program and give feedback where things went well or not so well.

You should have a flexible approach to work, as the demands of this role often involve working some unsocial hours including early/late shifts and weekends.
