Senior Clinical Fellow in Haematology

Southampton has a comprehensive research active Clinical Haematology department, incorporating Haematological Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, Transfusion Medicine, Haemoglobinopathies, General and Immune Haematology and Haemostasis & Thrombosis services. The Haematology service is subspecialty based and provides clinical and laboratory service both to the local population in Southampton and South West Hampshire, as well as tertiary referrals for specialist opinions for complex cases and for a range of clinical trials. The principal duties of the posts will include: Review of patients referred for CAR-T cell therapy, in an outpatient or inpatient setting. Liaison with referring teams, CAR-T consultants, and CAR-T coordination team in planning for apheresis, bridging, infusion, discharge, and post-CAR-T follow-up.
Management of patients undergoing CAR-T cell therapy in the inpatient and ambulatory setting, in collaboration with the subspecialty teams and supervising CAR-T consultants. Referral to other specialty teams (e.g. intensive care, neurology, cardiology) as required to provide optimal care of patients undergoing CAR-T cell therapy. Discussion of cases as appropriate at the Southampton lymphoma and leukaemia/myeloma MDTs, and the CAR-T MDT.
Active involvement with the development and expansion of the CAR-T service within the WBMT&CT, in collaboration with the subspecialty CAR-T leads. Active involvement in the recruitment and management of patients within CAR-T clinical trials Collaboration with other colleagues in the region through MDT and network-wide working Development of regional CAR-T referral pathways in collaboration with CAR-T lead consultants Participation in clinical governance activities including morbidity and mortality meetings and other committees as appropriate both within and external to the department. Contribution to the audit activities of the WBMT&CT Programme and wider haematology department, including specialty regional and national audit programmes. Where possible, to participate in the collection and analysis of local data with a view to preparing and submitting papers for publication, and to contribute to the ongoing collection of real-world UK CAR-T data through the National CAR-T Clinical Panel (NCCP).
Undertaking of procedures relevant to haematology, including bone marrow biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy, and tunnelled central catheter removal. Where necessary, appropriate training and supervision will be provided. Engagement with the education programme, including attendance at regular educational meetings. Pre-CCT post-holders will be expected to maintain an educational portfolio mirroring their equivalent stage of training.
Post-CCT fellows will be required to engage with the trusts existing appraisal system. Cross-cover to other specialty teams within haematology during both planned and unplanned absence. Education and Training Opportunities: The haematology education and training programme was overhauled in 2021 following the launch of the JRCTB Haematology Curriculum. You will have access to the same training opportunities as the Specialist Registrars including being allocated an educational supervisor, study leave and self-development time.
There is a weekly Wessex-wide teaching programme encompassing clinical and laboratory haematology plus specific laboratory morphology sessions for more junior trainees to gain laboratory competencies. There are several regional training days each year. There will be opportunity to take on Quality Improvement Projects and other clinical research activities dependent on your interests.
