Senior Fellow in Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work as a Senior Fellow in Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery. Job Overview You will work at a “Registrar / ST3+ level” and will generally work for a consultant team. You will be involved in the pre‑ and post‑operative care of the patients, together with the appropriate theatre sessions and clinics. You will be involved in the care of all the patients in the Cardiothoracic unit when on‑call. In theatre you will assist in operations and may perform supervised surgeries and procedures depending on your level of experience. The department is a busy, high‑performing cardiothoracic surgical unit and a major regional referral centre. Key Responsibilities Provide on‑call cover for cardiac and thoracic surgical patients, including emergency assessments and referrals. Participate in daily ward rounds, outpatient clinics, pre‑operative assessment, risk stratification, consent and peri‑operative care. Assist and participate in operative procedures under consultant supervision. Manage postoperative patients, including those in the Cardiac ICU and HDU, in collaboration with anaesthetic and intensive‑care teams. Contribute to the management of major trauma cases. Participate in audits, clinical governance and research activities. Engage in teaching and supervision of junior doctors, medical students and advanced care practitioners. Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings and departmental teaching. Qualifications, Training & Experience MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. GMC registration with a licence to practise. Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems. At least 12 months previous experience in Cardiothoracic surgery in a Junior role. Experience at ST3+/Registrar level in cardiothoracic surgery (Desirable). Completion of relevant Resuscitation courses or relevant experience (Desirable). Publications / Presentations in Cardiothoracic surgery (Desirable). Experience of teaching (Desirable). Salary & Terms Grades for Trust‑appointed (non‑training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (e.g. weekend allowance, hours set out in the doctors work schedule) will be awarded. Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Additional Information Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed doctors.
