We are looking for a highly skilled, motivated mental health practitioner to join our Street Triage Team for a fixed one-year contract, working alongside Thames Valley Police to improve care pathways for people in mental health crisis in Oxfordshire.

We work alongside Thames Valley Police to improve care pathways for people with mental health problems in Oxfordshire. Working with Police scanning Mental Health demand coming into police and making clinical decisions regarding what intervention required, consulting clinical records systems, and rapidly understanding/formulating clinical need - this is in relation to 999 activity - complex, risky and dynamic clinical decision making.

Mental Health professionals who works with the police will be offering professional advice, triaging individuals as they present, accessing health information systems, and helping to liaise with other care services to identify the right support for individuals. Also, information sharing with Police regarding people presenting to the Police with Mental Health needs, support, educating and inputting into police learning regarding the mental health needs of those presenting to the Police.

The aim of the service is to work in partnership and alongside the police to improve the overall experience and access to appropriate care pathways for persons with mental ill health who present to the police in a “crisis” state and mental health distress outside of custody. This may include arranging a more thorough voluntary assessment at the Littlemore hospital assessment hub, make a referral or request for follow up by the relevant community mental health team, give advice on how to access appropriate services, recommend use of sec 136 or recommend the detention in custody for consideration of the criminal justice process.

The teams are based at Thames Valley Police stations in Oxfordshire. There are three LPA within Oxfordshire, South Oxon &Vale, West Oxon and Cherwell, and Oxford City. You will work from your base police station alongside an officer and respond to incidents as they arise. You will be fully inducted to Thames Valley Police so that you have the appropriate skills and knowledge to use their systems such as the radio system and electronic data systems.

Street Triage operates between the hours of 16.00 - 02:45 7 days per week. The St Triage practitioner will deploy to any incident across Oxfordshire supported by the Police officer assigned to them for the night.
