Liverpool, United Kingdom Liverpool John Moores University Full time

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The School of Humanities and Social Science is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in African History, on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 12 months, to cover a period of research leave.

You will lead and teach on a number of modules on the BA History programme. This includes co-leading and co-teaching the Level 5 module, 5106HIST: Colonial Africa, 1880-1994, which introduces students to the history of sub-Saharan Africa under colonial rule, exploring both the character of colonial states and African agency in shaping the colonial encounter. You will cover material up to c.1940. You will also lead and teach the Level 6 module, 6114HIST: Interpreting Conflict in Post-Colonial Africa, which focuses on the local, national, regional, and global dimensions of warfare in Africa, both anti-colonial liberation wars and post-independence wars of secession. You will also lead and teach the Level 7 module, 7104IR: War and Peace in Africa Since 1990, which engages with both political science and historical approaches to the study of warfare in contemporary Africa, and forms part of the MA International Relations.

You will teach across a range of other core team-taught modules at Level 4 (4100HIST: Making History; 4101HIST Exploring History; 4103HIST: Lion Rampant, Lion Tamed: The Rise and Fall of the British Empire), and Level 5 (5101HIST: Debates in History). You will also supervise Level 5 research projects and Level 6 dissertations. There would be an additional expectation around the delivery of wider foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate teaching as required.

You should have completed a PhD in the discipline and have teaching experience at undergraduate level, specifically in African history. You should demonstrate the ability to teach innovatively, responsively, and flexibly. The department would welcome proposals from the BAME academic community, who have historically been under-represented in the profession.

Anticipated Interviews are expected to take place in early July, with an anticipated start date of early September.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion or belief. All our appointments are made on merit.
