What we are looking for
The role of Technical Author is a great opportunity to play an important role in high-profile military projects, to support the UK Armed Forces and our NATO allies, and to have your ideas and contribution valued in a medium-sized business where people really matter.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Technical Author role is as follows:
- To manage all allocated Technical Publications activities within MLS through the tendering, design, manufacture, test and delivery processes to ensure that customer requirements are met or exceeded.
- To ensure that all Technical documentation is undertaken in the most cost effective manner to achieve a quality level that meets customers' specifications.
- To ensure that all tasks are undertaken and managed in accordance with the programme and budget.
- To manage the development of all Publications (Commercial & Military), both electronically and hard copy, within the budgeted cost and programme requirements.
- To support ILS activities and the development of Logistic Support Analysis Records.
- To minimise product liability cost by the provision of the correct level of information within the Technical Documentation by the inclusion of precise operating and maintenance instructions, together with adequate Warning and Cautions.
- To help develop the Technical Publication processes and procedures to improve business efficiency.
This description is a minimum and in general the Lead Technical Author will be responsible for ensuring both Internal and External customer satisfaction through a first-class service, on-time delivery, product excellence and adherence to customer requirements.
- Technical Authoring experience is essential, and ideally this should have been gained within military or land based projects. However, other backgrounds such as automotive will also be considered, as training can be given.
- Knowledge of Military shelter and Support Systems.
- Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation requirements.
- Knowledge of all aspects of the production of Tech. Publications.
- Knowledge of Operation, Maintenance and Repair of Mechanical and Electrical equipment within MLS products.
- Knowledge of Def Stan 00-601 related to the production of AESP’s/IETP’s.
- Knowledge of ACEMA 1000D and possibly 2000M standards.
- Knowledge of Simplified English.
- Management and development of people.
- Use computer packages Word, Excel, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Epic Editor (Arbortext Editor), and or a Drawing Package.
- Good written and verbal communication to clearly express views and ideas.
- Ability to interact with all levels, both internally and externally.
