**Job Title**: JHF Youth Mentor

**Primary Purpose of Job**: JHF Mentors work to increase engagement, build resilience, and provide a positive role model to children and young people, working in the community or educational settings. Bespoke mentoring support is currently needed within Weston-Super-Mare, Nailsea, Clevedon, Portishead and surrounding areas.

**Reporting to**:Programme Manager

**Hours**: Flexible working hours available, depending on placements - up to 30 hours a week. Placements are mutually agreed depending on availability and suitability for each young person’s needs. Once agreed, placements take place at a consistent time each week, term-time only unless funded otherwise.

**Contract**: Self-Employed

**Rate**: £13.37 hourly starting rate

The JHF Youth Charity is a community-focused not for profit organisation that aims to inspire and empower young lives through the strength of positive relationships. We have been working within North Somerset and surrounding areas for 9 years and have built up an excellent reputation for delivering high quality, child-centred, bespoke support.

**Person Specification**:
You will be actively encouraging attendance and engagement, working 1:1 with young people to instil confidence and self-esteem. You will work flexibly with families, schools and outside agencies. You will be empathetic to the young person’s requirements and provide professional and reliable support to help them achieve their agreed outcomes.

You will be required to work independently and as part of a wider team. As each placement is bespoke, no two days will be the same. Within your role, you will be supporting young people in a variety of ways, encouraging them to participate in activities that challenge and inspire them.

**Skills required**:

- Ability to build positive relationships with young people and their families/carers
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Good IT skills (Gmail and G-suite are used for daily reporting)
- Being able to work using your own initiative and as part of a team
- Calm and positive presence
- Valid UK drivers’ licence and use of a car for work
- Right to live and work within the UK

**Desirable**:

- Experience supporting young people (either personally, professionally or as a volunteer)
- Experience working with young people with special educational needs
- Practical knowledge of safeguarding and child protection
- Enhanced DBS Certificate on the update service

**Responsibilities**:

- To maintain accurate records for reporting and safeguarding purposes
- To plan and deliver mentoring to an agreed work programme
- Maintain professionalism and represent the values and objectives of the JHF
- To be responsible for your own invoicing and comply with self-employment regulations
- To support the JHF’s engagement with the community and fundraising events
- To undertake any other duties within the scope of the role
