**Family/Client Pets**: A friendly dog, who Alfie loves
**About this client/child**:
Alfie, aged 8, is a bright, engaging boy who has a love of all sports including playing wheelchair tennis and racing, watersports, and supporting Liverpool football club Alfie has a spinal cord injury and is a full-time wheelchair user (and loves to speed in his chair). He requires catheterisation every 2-3 hours and bowel management support. Alfie is unable to feel pain. He needs to be closely observed for any symptoms of hypertension (high blood pressure), that could lead trigger his Autonomic Dysreflexia. He may become irritable or his skin mottled. Protocols and a care plan are in place, and comprehensive training will be provided so his SEN Nanny/Manny is aware of what to look out for and how to respond. Alfie’s parents live near to each other, but not together, and the role is split between the 2 households, both of which are adapted to meet his needs.
**Overview of role**:
This role is all about enabling Alfie’s independence, encouraging his many interests and activities, and supporting his rehabilitation therapy, while always remaining vigilant to any changes in his health, which can occur at any time. It is a careful balance of letting him be an 8-year-old; knowing when to step in and guide/advise Alfie, and when to step back. You’ll be his advocate when needed. You’ll support Alfie’s rehabilitation/physiotherapy with his parents, this often requires 2 people; he has some fantastic equipment in place. Alfie enjoys lots of afterschool activities, your role is often to just closely observe to check all is well. Alfie doesn’t feel or respond to pain in a typical way, so all knocks, falls, bumps etc. (that any 8-year-old would have), need to be accurately logged. It is important that a happy, fun family environment is maintained, while there are clinical needs, his home shouldn’t resemble a clinical setting. You’ll support Alfie’s personal care needs, encouraging him to independently do what he can; he is learning how to self-catherise. The hours in the school holidays are an average of 20 hours a week, to be mutually agreed, dependent on planned activities and leaving it open for the family to be spontaneous.
**Who this job would suit**:
This is a wonderful role for an active, enthusiastic, and energetic SEN Nanny/Manny who is committed to helping Alfie realise his potential by supporting his therapeutic rehabilitation and enabling him to take part in the activities he loves. Someone who embraces what he loves to do, and really gets involved. You’ll be super-vigilant and sensitive to any changes that may indicate a decline in his health. Excellent communication skills, someone who is sensitive, professional, and good fun
**What’s great about this job**:
Working with this amazing young man Excellent training and case manager support. Both parents are fully supportive, focused on giving Alfie as many opportunities as possible, and provide a lovely working environment.
