Environmental and Sustainability Officer

As the Environment & Sustainability Officer, you’ll assist and work with the organisation to ensure that we are operating in accordance with environmental guidelines and targets.
This will include examining IKO PLC activities to determine where improvements can be made, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation across the organisation. Creating and monitoring environmental strategies to promote sustainable development. This wide remit means reviewing the whole operation, carrying out environmental audits and assessments, identifying and resolving environmental problems and ensuring necessary changes are implemented. This is a developing role, and the following responsibilities will be assigned, in whole or in part, as the role progresses.
**Responsibilities**
- Work with other areas of the business to develop, implement environmental strategies, and action plans, to ensure corporate sustainable development.
- Assist the buyers with sustainable procurement for goods and services.
- Work with the compliance team to support and advise on aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation, and renewable energy.
- Endorse the implementation of environmental policies and practices.
Keep up to date with relevant changes in environmental and sustainability legislation, including EU and International legislation where applicable.
- Audit, analyse and report environmental performance to internal and external clients.
- Carry out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce environmental risks and financial costs.
- Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of the organisation, regarding the impact of emerging environmental issues.
Liaise with relevant bodies such as local authorities, public bodies and competent bodies as required.
- Implement best practice in areas of corporate, ethical, and social responsibility and address any issues arising.
- Manage relations with all stakeholders including the board of directors, senior management, product managers, internal staff, external suppliers, and customers.
- Participate in environmental education and market research.
- Write environmental reports.
- Set company sustainability targets, developing plans to meet those targets and oversee their delivery.
- Research and develop sustainability plan to meet legislative and company goals.
- Maximise the company’s membership within the Sustainability School.
**Requirements**:
- Bachelor’s in economic / communication studies or environmental science with a sustainability background
- Understand and utilise systems to carry out problem solving.
- Show initiative, to recognize emerging problems and proactively develop solutions using methods such as system thinking.
- Negotiate and organise.
- Demonstrate strong leadership and influence.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working requirements
- Strong IT skills must be able to analyse and interpret data to help make valid judgements and support risk management.
- Enthusiasm for sustainable development and drive to promote behavioural change.
