To carry out routine work in all sections of the Mortuary as required by mortuary management.
- To assist the Consultant Pathologists in Post Mortem work including the preparation of the deceased, the examination of the deceased, the re-construction of the deceased and the disinfection of the post mortem room facilities.
- To assist in the development of mortuary procedures and protocols relating to Post Mortems and the general operation of the mortuary service.
- The post holder will be required to perform a range of routine and non-routine tasks within the mortuary, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including the Pathology Quality
- Policy to provide technical support to the mortuary manager in order to ensure a high quality service.
- To assist the mortuary management with quality, manual handling, fire warden, health & safety in the mortuary.
- To be an efficient and flexible member of the mortuary team assisting in the delivery of the service.
- To assist the mortuary manager in providing a professional and dignified mortuary service for the NMCPS.
- To take part in both routine and specialised post mortem services on behalf of the coroner.
- To take part in the mortuary out of hours service.
- To adhere to all mortuary standard operational procedures.
- Maintains clinical records in relation to work carried out.
- Supervises and trains less experienced staff in own area of work
- To facilitate the confirmation of the deceased’s identification
- Preparing the deceased for a post mortem examination.
- To ensure a full range of protective clothing is available for the pathologists and any visitors during the post mortem examinations.
- Assisting during the post mortem process. This will include: removing the internal organs, specialised techniques when required, tissue and blood sample collection, data collection.
- Carrying out digital photography as directed by the pathologist.
- Oversee junior mortuary staff during the post mortem process.
- Training of junior pathologists and mortuary staff during the post mortem process.
- Carrying out respectful re-construction of the deceased in line with departmental procedures.
- To be aware of the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) regulations, UKAS ISO 15189 and report any problems to the mortuary manager.

The North Middlesex Hospital deals with around 1200 adult deaths, 120 stillbirths/NVF’s and 400 POC’s
- Assists with efficient use of consumables, performs and records preventative maintenance and completes reagent logs.
- Keep records of patients’ valuables and belongings.
- Provides practical induction and training to individuals e.g. Trainee APT staff. May be required to act as a mentor for new staff.
- To assist in the training and education and supervision of more junior mortuary staff and demonstrate post mortem techniques to other front line staff.
- Updating the post mortem register on a daily basis.
- Dealing with telephone enquiries relating to the mortuary service from both within and outside The trust.
- Booking deceased patients in and out of the system using ‘Masterlab’.
- Making sure funeral directors produce the correct documentation required to collect a deceased person from the mortuary.
- Making sure release forms contain signatures from the funeral director and a technician before the deceased is removed from the mortuary.
- To fully comply with the mortuary standard operational procedure dealing with the receipt and removal of foetus’ and stillbirths from the mortuary.
- Assisting the mortuary manager with any departmental audits.
- Assisting with the collection and distribution of patient medical notes.
