Job Overview This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Anatomical Pathology Technologist to join a committed and compassionate team providing a safe, secure and high‑quality mortuary and post‑mortem service for Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, the Coroner and our wider community. In this vital role you will use your Level 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology to deliver skilled, professional support across the full range of mortuary activities, working both independently and alongside experienced colleagues. You will play an active part in post‑mortem provision, quality management, audits, health and safety, SOP development and compliance with HTA and CPA standards, and support resource monitoring and training of junior staff. Key Responsibilities Engage with clinical and non‑clinical staff, HM Coroner officers, Police, Funeral Directors and Consultant Histopathologists to maintain a seamless service, based at University Hospital Lewisham with cross‑site cover. Record deceased details, maintain the Mortuary Register and manage deceased property in line with trust policy. Release deceased in line with departmental, Trust and HTA policies, ensuring appropriate documentation. Maintain records of equipment servicing, temperatures and cleaning to comply with HTA and CPA. Report problems and complete adverse incident forms. Liaise with external agencies (Coroner, Police, GPs) and bereavement, chaplaincy, women’s health counsellors, nursing, clerical staff. Prepare and place deceased for viewing respecting cultural and religious beliefs; accompany families. Assist with post‑mortem examinations, record organ weights and measurements, ensure accurate labelling and tracking. Assist in training junior staff, induction for nursing and portering staff. Assist bereavement office, oversee documentation, manage defibrillator/pacemaker disposal, collate certificates. Manage funeral director payments, raise cremation forms, free‑from‑infection forms. Maintain confidentiality of deceased, maintain H&S inspections, participate in departmental meetings. Qualifications Diploma (Level 4) in Anatomical Pathology Technology, or Level 3 with significant demonstrable experience. Experience in post‑mortem provision, quality management, audits and SOPs. Knowledge of HTA and CPA standards. Strong organisational and communication skills, ability to handle sensitive situations. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Competencies & Working Conditions Physical: ability to handle deceased, perform intense physical tasks, frequent exposure to bodily fluids and chemicals. Mental: maintain concentration over long periods, handle distressing scenes. Emotional: compassion, support bereaved families; manage emotional demands.
