An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a committed and enthusiastic International Clinical Fellow to a fixed term specialty training position in the Cellular Pathology Department at Kettering General Hospital. This is a new post attracting funding for up to 10 PAs in an established, efficient and UKAS accredited laboratory.

You will be supported by an existing team of experienced general Consultant Histopathologists. Each of the current Consultants has a special area of interest and if the new appointee has a specialist area arrangements will be made to accommodate this if possible.

The department has actively been promoting the development of reporting Biomedical Scientists in GI, Gynae and Dermatology specialties and has recently implemented a new laboratory information system.We will imminently be adopting digital image reporting in accordance with the East Midlands Pathology network plans to link with the 16 other Cellular Pathology departments within this network. It is envisaged that this will sustain successful and efficient flexible working, teaching of junior staff and access to expert opinion from the major cancer centres within the region.

Kettering has close links with the University Hospitals of Leicester and Northampton and supports junior pathologists rotating through the department. The post-holder would be required to participate in training and education plus audit activities and also participate in relevant quality assurance schemes.
- The microscopic examination of tissue sections and ability to request any additional investigations which will aid clinical diagnosis.
- The appropriate use of the department LIMS to enter a diagnostic report on all cases reviewed with a requirement to seek second opinions from clinical colleagues when needed or when cancer diagnosis is suspected. This MUST be under supervision only until fully qualified and signed off for independent reporting by mentoring Pathologist.
- Attendance and participation in Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings for nominated tissue specialty.
- The investigation and execution of special techniques as required and active participation in the development and validation of new techniques.
- Technical participation in clinical procedures including:

- Undertaking clinical audits as required

6 Participation in internal and external quality assurance programmes as appropriate.

7 The supervision and training of staff including SpRs and other BMS grades and visitors to the department.

8 Such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Laboratory Manager.

Sample Job Plan

Responsible for individual caseload within an agreed postgraduate FTSTA job plan. The job plan will include designated sessions for the following:

- Specimen dissection of histology specimens
- Microscopic histopathology reporting
- Multidisciplinary team meetings
- Training/teaching/ supervision of BMS staff
- Clinical audit
- Continuing professional development (CPD)

For whole time working, 10 periods of clinical activity are expected, divided as follows:
8x Direct clinical care ( Histopathology reporting/ specimen dissection/ MDT)

2x Supporting Professional Activities (to include, but not limited to: training/ clinical audit/ workload and staff planning/ EQA/ quality management/ mandatory training /CPD)

The work programme will consist mainly of clinical diagnostic duties in rotation with the other SpRs and Clinical trainees. The timetable will be agreed with the Specialty Lead and other Consultants and will be organised flexibly to respond to clinical need and service development.

1. It is expected that there will be some flexibility around the timing of some of these duties and activities.

There is currently no on call commitment

Communication and relationship skills
- Present and interpret highly complex clinical information to medical and scientific peers, using appropriate communication skills to offer expert opinion on interpretation in order to facilitate patient management.
- Present histopathology results at multidisciplinary team meetings and discuss findings where there may be discrepancies or differences of opinion.
- Provide specialist clinical information and advice to other health professional, patients and the public.
- Refer on requests for information outside your own area of competency, to the appropriate specialist seeking advice as required.
