The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Greater Manchester Patient Safety Research Collaboration (PSRC) is one of six collaborations nationally to address strategic patient safety challenges by developing and testing innovations, approaches, and interventions to improve patient safety. Working in partnership with patients, carers, health and care professionals, the GM PSRC focuses on the following innovative research themes:
- Improving Medication Safety
- Enhancing Cultures of Safety
- Developing Safer Health and Care Systems
- Preventing Suicide and Self-harm
We are a friendly, multi-disciplinary team, with expertise including behavioural science, social research, health services research, epidemiology, health economics, safety science, digital patient safety solutions, health informatics, intervention development and evaluation.

The NIHR GM Patient Safety Research Collaboration seeks a Research Associate in Developing Safer Health and Care Systems theme. The post-holder will be responsible to Professor Caroline Sanders.
The Role
The role will specifically focus on a study to enhance safety and equity in maternity care that entails qualitative research exploring access to and experiences of Antenatal Booking in Greater Manchester.
This project will use qualitative research methods, partnering with community organisations and women in areas with high rates of late booking in Greater Manchester. Working with Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise organizations, we will:
- Identify barriers to timely booking for women in Greater Manchester, especially those in communities with high late booking rates.
- Explore the challenges faced by stakeholders in providing care to underserved communities.
- Co-produce a booking pathway for women at risk of late booking, with recommendations for necessary resources, tools, and practices; and
- Contribute to improving outcomes by sharing best practices across the region.
