About us

The mission of the Research Department of Epilepsy is to transform the lives of people living with epilepsy for the better by identifying, understanding and correcting or preventing the underlying mechanisms leading to the epilepsies and associated comorbidities in each individual person. Our vision is to build upon the excellence and breadth of our research, seamlessly integrating basic and clinical science.

Within the department, the Epilepsy Imaging Group focuses on developing image-based solutions to improve epilepsy diagnosis and treatment. The group has a particular interest in the development and implementation of image-guided techniques, including stereotactic intracranial EEG recordings, tumour biopsy planning, and image-guided resections.

About the role

We are recruiting a Senior Research Fellow (Clinical Imaging) to join a NIHR-funded project titled "Refining Neurosurgical Planning Software for Clinical Use". This collaborative initiative between King's College London (KCL) and University College London (UCL) brings together expertise in computer science and clinical neuroscience. While the KCL team leads on software development, the UCL team is responsible for the clinical application and evaluation of the EpiNav platform - a neurosurgical planning tool developed to optimise intracerebral electrode placement and tumour biopsy trajectories, improving patient safety and surgical efficiency. EpiNav-generated plans can also be integrated directly with neurosurgical robotic guidance systems, supporting precision interventions.

You will play a central role in refining EpiNav for clinical use. Key tasks include optimising vessel segmentation on MRI, planning stereotactic EEG and biopsy trajectories, and assessing usability and efficiency. The role involves regular feedback to the development team, contributing to software updates, maintaining user documentation, analysing workflow data, engaging with patients and the public, supporting publications, and training external collaborators. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of neurosurgery, imaging, and digital health.

The post is available from 01 December 2025 and funded by the NIHR grant until 30 June 2028 in the first instance.

This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 80% of time on site.

If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, or have any queries regarding the application process, please contact the Institute of Neurology HR Team ).

Informal enquiries regarding the role can be addressed to Professor John Duncan ).

We expect to hold interviews on 12 November, either in person at 33 Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG, or via Microsoft Teams.

A full job description and person specification for this role can be accessed below. To apply, please upload a current CV, complete the online application form, and use the supporting statement section or upload a cover letter to outline how you meet the essential and desirable criteria for the role. Please do not upload any additional attachments as these will not be considered by the selection panel.

About you

You will hold a degree in Computer Science and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, have prior postdoctoral experience, and practical experience in the design, development, and implementation of clinical software tools for medical image processing and analysis.

You will be highly proficient in key tools and languages used in neuroimaging, including Freesurfer, 3D Slicer, MATLAB, SPM, Python, Bash scripting, and C++. In addition to your technical skills, you will be an effective communicator and collaborator, and capable of training others in the use of these platforms.

This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.
