Traffic Operator

We are looking for a hands-on and highly organised Traffic Operator / Planner to plan and be first line supervisor of the day-to-day transport operations at our Washway Lane site. This is a key role responsible for ensuring smooth running of the traffic planning office, maintaining compliance standards, and driving operational efficiency across the business.

You'll work closely with drivers and customers to ensure all transport activities run safely, legally, and on time — while continuously seeking ways to optimise performance and reduce costs.

What's involved?

Working as part of a small team, you will be planning routes for the fleet based at our St Helens depot who work predominantly on the movement of product from plants in Merseyside and Yorkshire to customers across the UK, Ireland and central Europe; therefore a good geographical knowledge is essential. You will also be responsible for assisting the Operations Manager to control vehicle and driver compliance and this is where your knowledge of drivers' hours regulations and vehicle servicing will come into their own.

We are looking for an individual who can help us continue our good work now and into the future, and therefore we are looking to cement a long-term commitment between Nijman/Zeetank and the successful candidate. Although we specialise in glass and bulk chemical transport, we are looking for someone who is willing to think outside of the box to fully utilise our fleet throughout the year, seizing opportunities when they arise and also being on the lookout for new opportunities to further enhance the business.

Responsibilities:

• Minimise wastage through effective resource planning
• Ensure fleet and drivers are legally compliant at all time
• Review transport plans and look at contingency strategies
• Maximise driver working hours through use of transport program
• Communicate with customers and drivers in a professional manner at all times

Skills:

• Highly competent in use of computers including Microsoft Office applications
• Experience of Transport Management/Planning systems advantageous
• Excellent customer service and administration skills
• Quick and effective decision making
• Able to work with numerical data
• Good UK graphical knowledge

This role is predominantly Monday to Friday however there is a need for work on Saturday morning and also being on call to answer phone queries if needed outside of office hours, both of which are on a rota basis. Recruitment for this position will involve an assessment centre which will last approximately 1.5-2 hours including interview and competency based assessments.
