Head of Department – Chemistry Specialist
Location: Reading, Berkshire

We are seeking an outstanding Head of Department with a specialism in Chemistry to join our dynamic and high-achieving state school in Reading. As the Head of the Chemistry Department, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the department, inspiring both students and staff, and driving excellence in teaching and learning.
About the RoleAs Head of the Chemistry Department, you will lead a team of talented and dedicated teachers, ensuring that the curriculum is delivered to the highest standards across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5. Your expertise in Chemistry will guide the department in fostering a passion for the subject, while also ensuring academic success and effective departmental management.
Strategic Leadership: As the Head of Department, you will lead curriculum planning, departmental initiatives, and ensure the delivery of high-quality Chemistry lessons that challenge and engage students.
Mentorship and Development: You will provide mentorship and support to your team, helping them to grow professionally and encouraging the sharing of best practices in Chemistry education.
Departmental Growth: Lead the Chemistry Department in its continuous improvement by implementing new strategies, overseeing assessment processes, and ensuring consistent student success.
Leadership and Management: Provide clear leadership to the Chemistry Department, ensuring that all staff are motivated, supported, and working towards shared goals for departmental success.
Curriculum Design and Implementation: Oversee the delivery of the Chemistry curriculum, ensuring it is both challenging and engaging for all students, and aligned with the school's academic standards.
Mentoring and Professional Development: As Head of the Chemistry Department, you will mentor and support the development of all department members, from early career teachers to more experienced staff.
Excellence in Teaching: Lead by example in delivering outstanding Chemistry lessons, fostering a culture of curiosity and critical thinking among students.
Collaborative Approach: Work closely with other department heads to ensure that cross-curricular learning is embedded, enhancing student experience across subjects.
A Highly Experienced Chemistry Teacher: You should have a degree in Chemistry (or a related field), QTS, and substantial experience teaching Chemistry across all key stages, including Key Stage 5.
Proven Leadership: Experience in leading and managing a team of teachers, with a track record of driving improvement and fostering a positive departmental culture.
Vision for the Department: As Head of the Chemistry Department, you should have a clear vision for departmental development, including curriculum innovation, assessment strategies, and student engagement.
A Passion for Chemistry: We are looking for someone with a deep passion for Chemistry who can inspire both students and colleagues to achieve excellence in the subject.
Strong Organizational and Communication Skills: The ability to lead a department with clear communication, effective planning, and the ability to motivate and manage people.
