Brighton & Hove City Council

Job introduction

Are you passionate about helping people stay in their homes and improve their financial wellbeing? Do you have experience supporting individuals in challenging situations. You don't need to have worked in income collection before—if you've supported people in housing, community services, or customer-facing roles, and you're comfortable using digital tools, this could be the opportunity for you.

We're looking for a customer-focused, empathetic, and proactive Income Advisor to join our Housing Income team. This is a rewarding role where you'll make a real difference to the lives of council tenants by supporting them in gaining access to financial support and promoting inclusion.

Fixed term for 12 Months to cover a secondment

This role is available as a secondment to internal applicants in line with our secondment policy. Before applying, please ensure you have read the Secondment policy to ensure you are eligible to apply. In accordance with the policy, please ensure you have the written approval of your line manager before applying. Evidence of this must be included with your application.

If you'd like to talk about the role or explore whether it's right for you, please contact Rodrigo Ferrer at or call

About the role

As an Income Advisor, you'll work with tenants from all walks of life, including those facing financial hardship, other barriers that affect their rent payments—and you'll be part of a dynamic team that values inclusion, respect, and collaboration.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Support tenants in understanding their tenancy agreements, and payment options for rent and service charges.
  • Helping residents understand their options and access to benefits or financial support.
  • Working closely with housing colleagues, internal teams and external agencies to promote tenancy sustainment.
  • Using your communication and problem-solving skills to build trust and resolve issues.
  • Keeping accurate records and using housing systems to track progress.
  • Encourage and assist tenants in using digital tools by helping them overcome common challenges.

What We Offer

  • A supportive, dynamic, inclusive team that values your voice and lived experience.
  • Regular training and development opportunities to grow your skills and shape a service that puts people first.
  • Certified Money Guider training from the Money and Pensions Service.
  • The chance to work in a role that supports financial inclusion and tenancy sustainment.
  • Flexible working and a strong commitment to staff wellbeing.

To succeed in this role, you will need to be resilient, adaptable, and committed to the continuous improvement of the service. You should be confident talking to people on the phone and in person about rent liability, money and wellbeing.

We actively encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, and those with lived experience of housing insecurity.

Please read our Apply for a job at the council pages carefully. They give you all the guidance you need to complete your application as well as information on what will happen after you've submitted your application and at interview.

As part of your application, you will need to upload your Application Form and answers to some shortlisting questions. Your answers to the shortlisting questions are the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Application Form guidance (brighton-) and (Shortlisting guidance (brighton-) as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.
