PIC Lead

Our client, a fast-growing
photonics startup based in Oxford
, is seeking a
Lead Photonics Engineer
to drive the design, validation, and delivery of advanced
photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
. This is a hands-on leadership role offering the opportunity to shape next-generation optical technologies from concept to production.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead PIC design, simulation, and validation across multiple technology platforms
• Oversee foundry interactions, including PDK selection, tape-out management, and process optimisation
• Drive packaging development and optical/electrical integration activities
• Plan and execute device characterisation and performance validation
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to translate system requirements into photonic solutions

Key Skills & Experience

• Extensive experience in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) development — from design through to packaging and testing
• Proficiency with photonic design tools (e.g. Lumerical, IPKISS, Nazca, GDS Factory, or equivalent)
• Strong understanding of fabrication processes, foundry workflows, and supply-chain management
• Experience coordinating external partners and foundries
• MSc/PhD in Photonics, Optoelectronics, Electrical Engineering, or Physics
• Excellent communication and leadership skills suited to a startup environment
